Presentation transcript:

Division of Biological Sciences Progress in gender equity among Ladder Rank Faculty from 1997 to 2011 Shelley Halpain, Ph.D. Faculty Equity Advisor, Biological Sciences Data collected & prepared by Pam Daener, Assistant Dean and Executive Officer; Melanie Ridenour, Senior Personnel Analyst

Hires by Gender 1997-2011 Women represented 1/3 of hires in the 1997 to 2001 period, 48% in 2002-2006, and 43.75% in 2007-2011

Hires by Rank and Gender

Separations by Gender 1997-2011 Women were 31%, 25% and 29% of separations during these three periods. This was comparable to their proportion of all LRF.

October 2008

Miscellaneous “Other” Areas Evaluated Overall promotion rates are similar Time to tenure slightly longer for women, who more often take advantage of family leave Promotions to Full Prof. and Above Scale are too few to interpret reliably regarding parity Accelerations seem to be proportional between men and women (again, too few to interpret reliably) Laboratory space allotments: seem to be similar and reflective of Division guidelines To be evaluated: size of start-up packages and/or other resources (e.g., access to shared equipment; memberships in ORUs)

Change in percent of women LRF from 6/30/95 to 3/31/11 Total LRF 1995 2000 2005 2010 3/31/2011 Women 7 11 17 19 20 Men 44 49 56 58 51 60 73 77 76 % Women 14% 18% 23% 25% 26% By Rank Professor 5 4 3 8 Associate Prof 1 2 Assistant Prof 31 37 36 41 39 9 10 12 6 47 13 14 15 23 Percent Women 10% 8% 16% 17% 11% 50% 27% 31% 36% 33% 48% 57% 47% Change in percent of women LRF from 6/30/95 to 3/31/11 Total LRF and by Rank
