Post Secondary Options Program (PSEO)

What is PSEO? Take courses, full- or part-time, at a post-secondary institution Earn high school and college credit Tuition, fees and required textbooks are at no cost to students. The program is administered through the Minnesota Department of Education Open to 11th and 12th graders who meet specific criteria 10th graders who qualify may enroll in a career or technical education course.

Admission Criteria Admission is determined by individual colleges University of MN – Twin Cities Successful completion of rigorous coursework Writing samples Juniors and seniors average 3.7 grade point average Normandale 11th grade – top 1/3 of class 12th grade – top 1/2 of class Placement tests

Things to consider Responsibility, maturity level, self-starter, independent learner, self-advocate On-going communication with high school counselor High school versus college experience Winter/Spring break Frequency of classes MTF and WTH schedule Transportation

Things to consider continued… Transferring credits to another college is dependent upon the transfer rules of that college - check with colleges. PSEO grades will be posted on your high school transcript. Final Grades: If a student receives a “C” in a 4 credit college class they receive a “C” for a full year class at Kennedy High School. PSEO grades are not weighted.

This is a “proposed” schedule. The final details are still being discussed.

Wednesday: Periods 1, 3 and 5 (with academic lab). Academic Lab is structured time when kids can get extra academic support. Thursday: Periods 2,4 and 6 (with homeroom/club meetings/multicultural liaison/GSA etc). Modified six period day schedule will only occur on weeks when there are 5 days in the week. Weeks that have fewer than 5 days will have a traditional 6 period day. Busses will pick kids up at 1:57 on Wed and Thurs. If questions come up about how this schedule will impact PSEO opportunities, please tell students that there will be a PSEO informational meeting during tutorial February 8th. (That meeting will be talked about later in this presentation as well).

What Classes to Take Students may take required and/or elective coursework through PSEO. See your counselor to find out what courses fulfill high school requirements. Students can choose to take PSEO courses full time or part time. See your counselor to ensure credit status toward graduation. Final course selection must have your Kennedy counselor’s approval.

Application Process Sign-up for classes at Kennedy as if you were NOT attending PSEO Schedule at Kennedy will be adjusted after student registers for PSEO classes Complete college PSEO application – download from college website or come to counseling office Complete MN State Form, also needs counselor signature Fill out and sign Student and Parent PSEO Contract Send transcripts through Kennedy counseling office Transcript Release Form, filled out, including parent signature Addressed/stamped envelope and $6 Attend orientation meeting at the college and take placement tests as required by the college
