Engineering Design in the Classroom Connections Engineering Outreach, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Scott Compeau and Desuree DeGagne www.queensconnection.ca @QEngConnections Connections - Queen's Engineering Experience Program

Connections Engineering Outreach Educational outreach program Experiential opportunities for pre-university students to learn about engineering Develop and share engineering-based educational activities that align with the Ontario curriculum Support and professional development opportunities for educators

Connections Engineering Outreach We have this infographic printed for you as a resource – it is our goal to be diffusers of innovation, and we are hoping that after today’s session you will be able to incorporate engineering design in your classrooms.

What is Engineering Design at Queen’s University?

What is Engineering Design?

Engineering Design: Guiding Questions Define Identify Brainstorm Select Prototype Test Iterate Communicate What is the problem we’re trying to solve? What are the constraints on your solution? What are your criteria for success? What are the possible solutions for the problem? Choose the most promising solution. Build your prototype. Evaluate your prototype. Does it work? Improve. Can we make it better? Explain your solution.

What does design look like in the classroom? Through problem-based projects rooted in engineering design students… Collaboration Critical thinking and problem solving Innovation, creatively, and entrepreneurship Communication Cross-curricular connections

Engineering Design Scenario: Air-propelled vehicle Design challenge: Air-propelled vehicle prototype for Tesla Develop a small-scale prototype vehicle uses propulsion energy (i.e. balloon) that can travel at least 5 meters as well as stop at exactly 1 meter. Performance, economic, environmental and social aspects will all play a key role in your overall assessment. There are two deliverables for this workshop: Submit a proposal for your project, that will need to be approved (10 minutes) Build/test your prototype, and reflect upon your design, to present to Tesla (20 minutes)

Engineering Design Challenge: Balloon Car Deliverable # 2 (20 minutes) What is the problem we’re trying to solve? Define Identify Communicate Brainstorm Select Prototype Test Iterate Explain your solution. What are the constraints on your solution? What are your criteria for success? Improve. Can we make it better? What are the possible solutions for the problem? Balloon Powered Vehicle Choose the most promising solution. Evaluate your prototype. Does it work? Deliverable # 1 (10 minutes) Build your prototype.
