If someone told you it would only take 30 seconds to save someone’s life, would you do it? That’s how long it takes to join the Indiana Donor Registry.

Today you’ll learn about the steps to take in making your own decision about registering as a donor.

Indiana Donor Network: is the link between patients waiting for a transplant, potential donors and their families is a not-for-profit organization and one of 58 organ procurement organizations that make up the nation’s donation network provides community education to prepare families before they are touched personally by donation and transplantation works with Indiana hospitals and transplant centers to provide hope and healing for families through donation and transplantation provides an aftercare program for the families it serves, and facilitates anonymous communication between donor families and transplant recipients

Introduce Indiana’s three transplant programs and types of transplants they provide (pictured organs include: heart, kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas and small intestine) Explain that IU Health includes IU, Methodist and Riley All patients waiting for an organ transplant are in a national database maintained by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)

Today there are 120,000 people waiting for a transplant Today there are 120,000 people waiting for a transplant. That’s enough people to fill Lucas Oil Stadium two times. That number of patients waiting includes about 1,500 Hoosiers.

Every 10 minutes someone is added to the national organ transplant waiting list.

Sadly, 22 people die each day because a donated organ was not available in time..

Physicians will determine what can be donated to help others.

An individual’s donation status does not affect their medical care An individual’s donation status does not affect their medical care. Donation does not become an option until all life-saving efforts have failed and death has been declared.

Donation is viewed as a final act of love and generosity.

Living donations include a kidney or part of the liver, lung, intestine or pancreas.
