Towards Rebellion The cause of unrest…..1791-1838

Constitutional Act: 1791

Problems with the Constitutional Act Governor and Legislative Council had power to VETO laws proposed by the Legislative Assembly It was not responsible…..

Population-1791 Areas start to get OVERCROWDED: Mauricie & Outaouais Increasing english immigration is bringing conflict to Lower Canada

Conflict in the Timber Trade…. A) Jobs: Lumberjack, log driver, sawyer B) Workers compete for same jobs and the Irish will work for less….

Timber Trade…work year round now Timber replaces fur as the main export out of Quebec and the economy is increasing as is the standard of living.

Effects on the people and Lower Canada Increased number of workers and artisans Banks emerge as a result of the larger economy and excess money. (Bank of Montreal) This gives people more access to credit and capital...the economy is changing.

New transportation (steamships) Canals make it easier to transport goods inland Lachine Canal (1830’s)

New “colonization” areas open…. Mauricie, Saguenay

5. Grosse Ile A) It was a quarantine station for the Port of Québec from 1832 to 1937. B) At the time, the island was the main point of entry for immigrants (mostly Irish) coming to Canada. C) Cholera was a disease that was brought by immigrants and this was basically an island where sick immigrants would be dropped off to die.
