Linear Equations and Functions Words to Know By Robert O. Mills Jr Hermitage High School Henrico County Public Schools

Linear equation An equation whose graph is a straight line

Slope (M) A measure of the steepness of a straight line Tells how fast one variable changes compared with the other. Rise over run

Rise The change between two points on a line in an up-and-down direction

Run The change between two points on a line in a left-to-right direction

X-intercept The x-value of an ordered pair at the point where a line crosses the x-axis The x-value when the y-value is 0 (x,0)

Y-intercept (b) The y-value of the ordered pair at the point where a line crosses the y-axis The y-value when the x-value is 0.(0,y)

Slope-intercept form m is the slope. b is the y-intercept

Standard form

Direct variation K is a positive number. As one variable increases, the other increases.
