Reflect back on Unit 5. Identify territories that the US acquired. Do Now Reflect back on Unit 5. Identify territories that the US acquired. Northerners don’t want slavery permitted in these new territories, but Southerners do. How can we determine which territories should have slavery or not?

US Map Create a list of states by numbering your map and making a list of states that corresponds to the map. You should do this for all 50 states. Mark which states you know from prior knowledge (think back to the map activity last week) that are Northern or Southern states.

III. Sectionalism from Manifest Destiny

A. Missouri Compromise Missouri Compromise (1820): Addressed the issue of slavery in new states. Problem: Needed to determine whether new states would be slave states or free states. Why is this a major issue? Admitted ________ as a slave state and ________ as a free state. Also created a boundary line: where was it? Why might this line not work?

B. Compromise of 1850 California applied to join the Union as a free state. Where did this territory come from? Why is this a problem? Wilmot Proviso - proposal in Congress that any territory gained in a war with Mexico should be closed to slavery, but fails. If it failed, then why is this important?

B. Compromise of 1850 Henry Clay’s compromise Four parts – the North got: California as a ________________ Ended the ____________________ in Washington, DC The South got: Fugitive Slave Act What is this? No more interference with the slave trade

C. Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 - Championed by Stephen Douglas to territory in present day Nebraska. Established popular sovereignty: Allow each state to decide whether to have slavery or not. How? Reversed the Missouri Compromise. Took blame off federal government – now the people decide.

D. Bleeding Kansas Had popular sovereignty to decide whether Kansas would be a slave or free state. Why could Kansas decide? Result: People from both sides of the argument rushed in to settle in Kansas so they could vote for their side. Fight broke out – about 200 people died and lots of property destruction.
