Faculty of Law, HKU Going on Exchange 2019-2020 (Integrated Degree) Alex Green Deputy Director of Student Exchange (Outgoing)

First Principles Decide whether you wish to do a BSS, BBA or BA exchange OR a law exchange. It is not possible to do both. If you wish to do a BSS, BBA or BA exchange, you may only transfer a maximum of 12 HKU law credits, possibly less – at the discretion of the Director. Apply through your other faculty in the usual way, making your wish to study some law very clear and giving full details and your other faculty will liaise with us.

Principles continued Exchange is a privilege and a great opportunity. It does not come free. You may need to use some or all of your 72 credit/ year overload allowance in earlier years to clear away sufficient space for exchange, certainly for a full year exchange. You should be happy with that. Your object should be to try to have as many law elective and free elective credits available for exchange as is possible. Even so, you may end up earning more law elective credits than you strictly need to graduate – an education bonus, not a problem.

Principles continued Conversely, you should try to clear away as many compulsory/ PCLL prerequisites as possible – to maximize your exchange options. Don’t concentrate all your attention on the UK. North America, Europe, Australasia, Israel are excellent integrated degree students – not so good for transferring PCLL prerequisites but that really shouldn’t be the point of exchange.

Securing The Best Exchange Options We take both overall CGPA and Law CGPA into account. We try to be fair between the different schools in allocating the very best places. The best law students are keen and active readers of primary and secondary materials, active participants in class discussions.

BBA(LAW) Current First Years: Do the Chinese language requirement whatever it is for you. Current Second Years: Complete: All business courses that can be completed in the 2nd year (FINA 1310, IIMT2601, MGMT2401, MKTG2501, BE) 3 common core Third years: Swap your 3 free electives for Land Law I and II and Introduction to Chinese Law. (not available on exchange) Possibly move 2 BBA Major electives up from Year 4. That leaves 60 law credits, 6 Strategic Capstone + 6-12 BE if not moved in year 3) + 42 electives for years 5 & 5.

Advice for Current Fourth Years & Accountancy Majors SEE your Programme Director Mr Michael Jaskson or myself. Accountancy majors: Only one semester exchanges please. Fourth Years: IT IS EXTREMELY RISKY TO LEAVE ANY COMPULSORY COURSES/ PCLL PREREQUISITES TO YOUR FINAL YEAR EXCHANGE. YOU MAY END UP CHOOSING BETWEEN YOUR EXCHANGE, DEFERRAL OR STAYING IN HK!!!

BA(LS) & LAW First & Second Years: Front load all Common core and language courses into these two years. Second Year: Try to do Introduction to Chinese Law Intensive course in Shanghai. Third year: Take Commercial Law and Business Associations instead of promoted university requirements Third Year: Possibly also take front load additional literary studies. Fourth & Fifth Years. A one semester exchange with 30 law electives is easy, a full year exchange is more difficult but not impossible depending on the host. Consider splitting your exchange between law and literature/ interdisciplinary options – either with Faculty or with IAO.

CURRENT 4th YEARS SEE Mr Marco Wan or myself IT IS EXTREMELY RISKY TO LEAVE ANY COMPULSORY COURSES/ PCLL PREREQUISITES TO YOUR FINAL YEAR EXCHANGE. YOU MAY END UP CHOOSING BETWEEN YOUR EXCHANGE, DEFERRAL OR STAYING IN HK!!!

BSS (Govt & Law) Your limited number of electives need not be a problem – because you can transfer back more electives than you need – provided you are NOT deferring. Year 1 If you do not need to do University English, do an extra Common Core instead – save the free elective. Year 2 If possible, add CSSC9001 Practical Chinese and Introduction to Chinese Law (intensive course in Shanghai). Year 3 Re Global Citizenship or Social Innovation, you may either Do the necessary 12 credits in your Year 1 or Year 2 summer or Leave the 12 credits to use as elective credits on your exchange. Either way, you free up 12 Year 3 credits. Use these for compulsory LLB subjects. (Commercial Law and Business Associations) or 2 x PPA electives. If you have not yet done CSSC9001 and Introduction to Chinese Law, do them now.

EXCHANGE FOR BSS (Govt & Law) Whatever you do, you will have 4-6 PPA electives to do during Years 4 – 5. A IAO exchange with all or mainly PPA electives may be an attractive option. For law exchange, if you have deferred Global Citizenship you will have at least 12 + 12 free electives + 1 disciplinary elective ie a full semester of 30 electives. A one semester exchange, even a full year with some PPA electives is not difficult. Even without Global citizenship, because you can incorporate 360 HKU credits in your degree, and do 36 or up to 72 on your return from exchange, one semester or even full year exchanges are still possible with careful planning.

EXCHANGE FOR BSS (Govt & Law) Courses to be taken to fulfil the 12 credits of Global Citizenship must be transferred as advanced level course. Whether the course is transferrable as an advanced level course is determined by the offering department at HKU.  Years 1-3 students should submit their online application for transferring courses to the Faculty of Social Sciences Years 4-5 students should submit theirs to the Department of Law. Where necessary, the Faculty of Social Sciences / Law Department will seek advice on the transferability of courses from the departments offering the respective courses.
