Abject Definition: Sentence: Extremely bad, unpleasant, and degrading. When Mark lost his job, he was abject for weeks and would not leave his house.

Ambivalent Definition: Sentence: The state of having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone. Sentence: I am ambivalent as to whether or not I want to take the medicine because of the drug’s known side effects..

Cognizant Definition: Sentence: Having or showing knowledge or awareness. Sentence: Because I have been on a tight budget for two years, I am very cognizant of the importance of using coupons to get the best deals.

Emulate Definition: Sentence: Strive to equal or match, especially by imitating/copying. Sentence: Aspiring to become a good cook, Kate will emulate the recipes and cooking techniques of chef Emeril.

Insidious Definition: Sentence: Working or spreading in a hidden and usually evil/harmful way. Sentence: After the police conducted their investigation, they realized the suspect had created an insidious scheme by which he tricked elderly people out of their medications.

Paradigm Definition: Sentence: A standard or typical example. Even though Liza is an unconventional teacher, she still supports the educational paradigm that is used by most of the veteran teachers at her school.

Pernicious Definition: Sentence: Exceedingly harmful. Because she dislikes me, my neighbor is always spreading pernicious lies about me.

Placid Definition: Sentences: Calm; peaceful. Even when the emergency room was packed with patients, the staff remained placid and calmly did their duties.

Reprobate Definition: Sentence: A person without moral scruples. Although the old man pretended to be a reprobate in public, in private he did a lot of good deeds for charity.

Sanguine Definition: Sentence: Confidently optimistic and cheerful. Despite the fact the soldiers have not been home in eight months, they are still sanguine about seeing their families soon.
