What is a DD214? The Defense Department issues to each veteran a DD-214 identifying the veteran's condition of discharge honorable, general, other than honorable, dishonorable or bad conduct. Before January 1, 1950, several similar forms were used by the military services

Military Regulations Air Force Regulation 36-3202 Guidance Memorandum for the Preparation of Separation Army Regulation 635-5 concerning the preparation and distribution of separation documents Marine Corps Separation and Retirement Manual, MARCORSEPMAN Naval Military Personnel Manual NAVPERS 15560D National Guard's process for their issuance of their discharge certificates (NGB22)

Why is a DD214 important? Date and place of entry into active duty Home address at time of entry Date and place of release from active duty Home address after separation Last duty assignment and rank Military job specialty Military education Decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign awards Total creditable service Less than 90 days not eligible Foreign service credited Separation information (type of separation, character of service, authority and reason for separation, separation and reenlistment eligibility codes)

Who’s Entitled to a Copy of a Veteran’s DD214? The Privacy Act of 1974 limits access to a veteran’s DD214 to only the service member (either past or present) or the member's legal guardian If the former service member is deceased the surviving next of kin may, under certain circumstances un-remarried surviving spouse, father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother

Where can I find my military records? Most veteran's records are stored at the National Archives and Records Administration's National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records (NPRC-MPR OR NPRC), St. Louis, Missouri. However, if you were separated from the service after 1995, your military branch may have your records. Regardless of what anyone tells you, your records ARE NOT available online.

Is the DD214 used to evaluate credits? 169 Schools represented 17 schools polled None uses it for credit, only for verification of service Joint Service Transcript (JST) Army (AARTS), Navy/Marine Corps (SMART), Coast Guard (Coast Guard Institute Transcript) JST is an academically accepted document approved by the American Council on Education (ACE) to validate a service member's military occupational experience and training along with the corresponding ACE college credit recommendations.
