Read Across America Day Welcome Dea parents!

What is Read Across America? NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. (113th Birthday/ Passed at the age of 87 in 1991) www.nea.org/readacross Hold up Green Eggs and Ham and Cat in the Hat books

READING WORKSHOP STRATEGIES for Kindergarten Sound Power Super Readers * Basic reading powers readers need to be successful. Picture Power At this point you would model what that looks like to parents. You would have a book and show them how to ask their kids questions to get them to use those powers. Tell them that students use all of these powers but today you are just going to focus on these two. Bring a parent volunteer up (tell them to pretend that they don’t know a word) show other parents how to use these powers. You might even have something for them to write on where they write down the questions you are asking to get them to use the power. Sound: What letter to you see at the beginning of the word? What sound does it make? Let’s see if we can stretch out the sounds we hear. Does the word you said match the sounds in the word? Picture Do you think the author included a picture that might help? Let’s see What is the 1st letter? Do you see a picture that has that 1st letter? Does the word you said match other sounds in the word?

READING WORKSHOP STRATEGIES for 1st Grade PARTNERS MAKE PLANS Reread this book with a smooth voice. Reread to figure out confusing parts. Reread this book once to figure out the tricky words, then reread again right away. Reread this book to find new information or details. Reread to make your voice match the character’s feelings. At this point you would model what that looks like to parents. You would have a book and show them how to reading partners make plans. Tell them that students use all of these strategies but today you are just going to focus on these two highlighted in red. Bring a parent volunteer up. Ask them to be your partner. Have a Dr. Suess book available. Pretend that you are rereading the book and look new information? Read another page or two make your voice match the character’s feelings? ( you could both try it)

READING WORKSHOP STRATEGIES for 2nd GRADE Questions Partners Can Ask Each Other… What’s happening so far? What’s this mostly about? How is the character changing (or not)? What is the character learning? At this point you would model what that looks like to parents. You would have a book and show them how to ask their kids questions to get them to use those partner strategies. Tell them that students use all of these strategies but today you are just going to focus on these two highlighted in red. Bring a parent volunteer up. Ask them to be your partner. Have a Dr. Suess book available. Read a page or two and ask them what’s happening so far? Read another page or two and ask what’s this mostly about?

Fountas & Pennell The F&P Text Level Gradient should be seen as a continuum of progress for readers. Student are assessed at each interim to determine independent reading level
