Practice Questions for Science Process/ Models Test Read each slide. Answer the questions on it as best you can. The next slide provides the answers so you can check your work.

Science Process The Big Six Testable Questions – questions that can be measured or observed. Variables – the thing that the scientist changes to see a result Constants- the things in the experiment that remain the same. Tools – devices we use to measure and observe. Data – Collection – collection of facts and observations. Graph – the most appropriate type of graph for the data collected.

Is it a testable question? Which paper towel brand absorbs the most water? Do animals need shelter to survive? Which bird can live in the desert? Can you water a plant too much? How much time will it take for a bean plant to grow 6 cm? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn?

Is it a testable question? Which paper towel brand absorbs the most water? Testable, it is specific, possible and measurable. Do animals need shelter to survive? Not testable, this is impossible to test. We can’t observe all animals. Which bird can live in the desert? Not testable, this is impossible to test. We can’t observe all birds. Can you water a plant too much? Not testable. It’s close though. If it were reworded to include a measurable amount of water, it could be tested. How much time will it take for a bean plant to grow 6 cm? Testable. It is specific, possible and measurable. Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? Testable. It is specific, possible and measurable.

What is the variable in this experiment? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest?

What is the variable in this experiment? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? The types of wood Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? The brands of paper towel. Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? The amount of light Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest? They design of the airplane

What are the constants in this experiment? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest?

What are the constants in this experiment? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? Start time of fire, the fire pit, the way the fire is ignited, weather conditions. Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? Size of paper towel, water Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? Type of plant, amount of water, frequency of watering. Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest? Type of paper, weather conditions for flying, force of throw.

What is being measured or observed? What tools will you need? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest?

What is being measured or observed? What tools will you need? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? Time is being measured, need a timer / stop watch. Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? Water is being measured, graduated cylinder is needed. Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? Plant growth is being measured, centimeter ruler is needed. Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest? Distance is being measured, meter stick is needed.

Which type of data collection tool will you use Which type of data collection tool will you use? Which type of graph will be appropriate to display your data? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest?

Which type of graph will be appropriate to display your data? Does the type of wood affect how long it will burn? A bar graph will compare the time it took to burn each type of wood. Which paper towel brand will absorb the most water? A bar graph will compare the amount of water each towel absorbed. Does the amount of light affect how well a plant will grow? A line graph will show how each plant’s height changed over time. Which paper airplane design will fly the farthest? A bar graph will compare the distance each airplane flew.

Scientific Models – help us understand things that may be: too small to see, too big, too far away, take too long to form, are too fast to see, too slow to see etc. Benefits – help us understand how things… Limitations – the properties of the model that are not like the real thing. Look Change Work Form interact Size Amount of time passing Movement of the parts Materials used.

What are the limitations of each model? A model of the grand canyon being formed. A model of the phases of the moon.

What are the major limitations of each model? A model of the grand canyon being formed. Time, size A model of the phases of the moon. Materials, size,

What are the limitations of each model? A model of a fossil A model of a plant cell.
