Artificial Intelligence What exactly is it? Adapted from “How to Explain AI to Kids” Science Fiction, Movie Trailers, and YouTube Videos I Use to Help Kids Understand Artificial Intelligence By Sherol Chen https://medium.com/eliza-effect/science-fiction-movie-trailers-and-youtube-videos-i-use-to-help-kids-understand-artificial-38a6c08d4652

Is this paper intelligent? What is Artificial Intelligence? Does a rock have AI? Does my pen have AI? Does a dog have AI? Do I have AI? So, what is intelligence? Is this paper intelligent?

Why do computers exist? This film is based on the biography of Alan Turing who decrypted German intelligence codes for the British government during World War II.

Video Follow-up Questions Why did they want better machines? Before we had the technology to do these tasks for us, how were these tasks done? How do you imagine and build something that doesn’t exist yet?

What is Artificial Flight? Do birds have Artificial Flight? What is flight? If I throw a paper ball, is that flight? What if it’s a paper airplane? How did we even know flying was a thing? How did we finally invent Artificial Flight? What inspired us to fly?

What is Artificial Intelligence? A.I. Artificial Intelligence was a film directed by Steven Spielberg that tells the story of David, a childlike android uniquely programmed with the ability to love.

How can we build better machines? Open your Brain Book and make two columns. In column A, list ways that computers are better than humans. In column B, list ways that humans are better than computers.

Computers are better … faster good at math better at repetition don’t need to sleep or eat better at searching and remembering things better for communication (email, voice mail)

Humans are better … emotions seeing hearing tasting touching creating being original

What is this? Why is it useful? What does it imply about computers?

Machines… not so much for now. Humans are quite good at seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Machines… not so much for now.

Are computers or humans better at Sudoku?

Are computers or humans better at chess?

Are computers better at making pancakes?

Are computers better at moving about?

Are computers better at catching something?

Are computers better at driving?

Will computers ever be able to have human emotions?

What then is artificial intelligence?
