Kahoot: Bringing learning to life Bryony Hawthorn Information Services Librarian – Library Open up Uni Kahoot in one browser and personal Kahoot in another Please ask questions as we go Chance to have a go at the end – chocolate and bragging rights up for grabs! waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING

What is Kahoot? Free online game-based learning platform No licence required You can create quizzes and surveys Two game options - Kahoot and Jumble Can be played on any mobile device or computers with internet connection Idea came from Rob Baigent from AnyQuestions Continually updating it, adding features etc Explain the differences between Kahoot and Jumble: Kahoot = short quiz questions, 2-4 answers, can set time limits for questions (5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 seconds) Choose one correct option from coloured squares on your device to match answer on screen at front of class Jumble = ask participants to place items in order Drag four coloured shapes into the order you think is right using the elements on the main screen at the front of the class Good for referencing as it involves elements – author, date, title, publication information (REMEMBER THIS FOR LATER!) Points awarded for correct answers – the fastest you answer the more points you get. Leader board (top 5) after each question Can pause the quiz and come back to later Can also create discussions and surveys Can be played on mobile devices or computers waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING

Why use Kahoot? Easy to create and manage Simple for students to use Students can be anonymous if preferred Colourful and interactive Fun Instant diagnostic tool Why we thought it might work: no licence problems all web based easy to create/manage quizzes simple to use for students anonymous for the students (no pressure) colourful interactive fun good diagnostic tool – can tell immediately that students aren’t picking up a point and then can clarify it waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING

How it works Kahoot Short quiz questions 2 to 4 answers Choose correct answer from coloured squares Jumble Put answers in order 4 slots Drag coloured rectangles into four slots in the order you think is right waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING

How we’ve used Kahoot In lecture theatres and classrooms during APA referencing classes Breaks up (boring?!) APA content Tests comprehension of topic Can get analytics on class responses interactive (gets students involved) allows “exercises” within a lecture theatre which make the students assess what they have been listening to and put it in action Can download responses – get analytics waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING

Negatives Limited length of questions and answers 95 characters for questions 60 characters for answers Connection issues/wifi Access to mobile devices waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING

Responses Lecturers Students Positive feedback Have noticed more engagement and interaction from students than in previous APA classes Encouraging students to make their own Kahoots Students Paying more attention to material taught in class Positive engagement with quiz Classes used in MCOM104 Written communication for management Education classes – Early childhood postgraduate class, MMP classes CUPR - Pathways College classes (Certificate in University Preparation) Jumble made students think more – could see them concentrating. Helped students to identify elements (eg italics for book title but not for chapter title, article title) waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING

Possible applications Team training School visits – test children on library knowledge Teachers – get students to create their own Kahoots for classmates to play Team training (like AnyQuestions) Mention WCel Fest session – teachers getting students to create their own Kahoots to be played by other students in the class. Gets them to think even more about their topics and answers and then put that knowledge into a colourful format for others to enjoy. waikato.ac.nz WHERE THE WORLD IS GOING
