Water Use in Sustainable Buildings IET 51500 Facilities Planning and Management Research Paper Presentation Patty Glembocki 11 December 2015

Sustainability Sustainability is the concept of “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” The 1987 World Commission on Environmental Development Triple bottom line People Environment Finances

Objective Water scarcity Sustainable building operation Is becoming a global crisis Affects people, the environment, and the economy (The Triple Bottom Line) Sustainable building operation Can reduce water use Will help the people, environment and economy thrive

Water Scarcity Affect on people Affect on environment Syria: Public water rationing and high priced private water Affect on environment Colorado River: No longer flows all the way to the Gulf of California Affect on economies Texas: $9 billion in lost revenue due to drought

Opportunities Organizations – LEED, EPA – providing leadership for water reductions. Utilities – creating financial incentives to conserve. Building Owners – better access to information and better support for conservation.

Conclusion Sustainable buildings will: Promote social well-being by making more water available to serve basic human needs. Reduce the impact on the environment by maintaining the rivers and lakes and their wildlife. Increase the financial well-being of the company by reducing expenses Working together, we will be able to address the limits of our resources and find ways to provide buildings for people, planet and performance to thrive.
