The Daily CSI Monday, 9/11/17 Case – The Archaeological Dig "I've finally earned my place as assistant curator of the museum", said Bob Hobbie to Max, the chief administrator of the Belgra Archeological Museum. "I moved West of the Pakistani dig site and we've just unearthed some wonderful coin artifacts." "Why did you start digging in a new location?" asked Max. "One of the local natives told me that, for many generations, his family had passed down a legend of a lost village and he found a map among his father's things," said Bob. "His father recently passed away", he added. "The native followed the map and led me to this site on the condition that if we discovered anything of value he would be paid one thousand dollars", explained Bob. "And what is it that you found buried,?" asked Max. "It's just terrific," exclaimed Bob, "we found 3 gold coins of various sizes dated 400 B.C., and after properly dusting them off I found them to be in excellent condition." "I quickly paid the native to complete our verbal contract and keep him from trying to claim a portion of the discovery," concluded Bob. After considering for a few moments, Max told Bob that when he returns home he should look for another job!!  Why? Max realized that Bob had been taken in by the local native because there couldn't be any coins dated B.C. How would anyone have known it was B.C?

What do Forensic Entomologists do? Forensic entomologists apply their knowledge of entomology to provide information for criminal investigations. A forensic entomologist’s job may include: Identification of insects at various stages of their life cycle, such as eggs, larva, and adults. Collection and preservation of insects as evidence. Determining an estimate for the postmortem interval or PMI (the time between death and the discovery of the body) using factors such as insect evidence, weather conditions, location and condition of the body, etc. Testifying in court to explain insect-related evidence found at a crime scene. Did you know? Maggots can be used to test a corpse for the presence of poisons or drugs. Some drugs can speed up or slow down the insect’s development. Cool Jobs: Forensic Entomology Discovery Video

Questions At what location was the photograph taken? How many cars are pictured? What color are the cars?  What types of offices are located in the building?  How many small trees are in the picture? The photograph was taken in New York State during which season? How many people are in the photograph?

Questions What is pictured in Photograph 2? Describe the shape of the object pictured. What are the colors of the object? What color edged the top of the object? Upon what is the object displayed? Describe or sketch the design on the object. What is the approximate size of the object?

Questions How many people are in Photograph 3? What is the sex of the person in the picture? What is the approximate age of the person in the photograph? What color is the person’s hair? Does the person have long hair or short hair? Does the person have any distinguishing features? Glasses? Can you describe the person’s clothing? Can you describe where the picture was taken? Based on evidence in the photograph, can you form a hypothesis about the person’s occupation? Is it possible to identify the interests of the person based on evidence in the room?

Discussion Questions 1. Did everyone answer all of the questions correctly? 2. If everyone viewed the same photograph, what are some possible reasons why answers differed.

Discussion Questions 3. Do you think it is easier to answer questions about a photograph if a person is in the picture? Why or why not? 4. Did your ability to see more detail and answer more questions correctly improve with practice?
