The New Deal

Spiral of the Depression People lose their jobs. Demand drops. Fewer goods are sold. The Spiral Of Depression Even more people Lose their confidence And spend less money In order to stay in business companies cut wages Good place to point out that the spiral of depression is the opposite to the cycle of prosperity. Even discuss in relation to Henry Ford and the impact on the other industries that produced his standardised goods. Companies are forced to cut costs by laying people off People lose their confidence & start saving their money Demand drops even further.

The United States Needs Help! Unemployment at record highs Banks collapsing No disposable income Losing farms to Dust Bowl Blame it on Hoover! Who can help Us?

FDR’s Personal Qualities He was a charismatic person who exhibited a warmth and a people person. His personality was his greatest asset He was willing to try new things to ways to boost economy

Election of 1932 FDR campaigns on his promise relief for the poor through public works programs What he did was very vague in the way he presented his promises or policies but told the masses what they wanted to hear It was the governments job to take action to help the countries people Roosevelt wins the election of 1932 easily

Roosevelt's Philosophy Roosevelt wanted to use his personality to his advantage Roosevelt comes up with a way to utilize his personality and talk to the American public before TV Uses fireside chats through radio to make it seem like he was in your living room talking to you. Speaking calm, clear, and easy to understand. Citizens never saw him but they knew him

Eleanor Roosevelt Franklin Roosevelt’s Wife Distant Cousin to Franklin Often considered an important reason for FDR’s success She was her husbands “eyes and ears” collecting information and insight Very passionate on many social issues ex. Lynching of African American Help change the role of the First Lady Received thousands of letters from citizens for her activism and influence

New Deal Together Franklin and Eleanor created a team that tries to take action to fix the Great Depression “The only thing we need to fear is fear itself” Roosevelt immediately takes action in his presidency with new legislation 100 days- first 100 days in office Now a measuring stick for Presidents This legislation is called the New Deal-Government spending programs to boost economy

Reversing the Spiral of Depression Gov’t Agencies $$$ Government Spending $ More Pay = More Taxes More Jobs Democrats called this Process ‘Pump Priming’ Cycle of Prosperity! More Jobs More goods have to be produced More Spending Demand for goods increases Why not print this presentation out using the print handout command and select 3 slides per page. The students can then make notes as they go along! Demand for goods increases More Spending More goods have to be produced More people with Jobs = more income

Purposes of the New Deal Relief to provide jobs for the unemployed and to protect farmers from foreclosure Direct aid to people and farmers Recovery: to get the economy back into high gear Back to prosperity Reform: To regulate banks, to abolish child labor, and to conserve farm lands Change of laws to make sure the Great Depression doesn’t happen again

New Deal SHORT TERM Provide relief and temporary work for the jobless LONG TERM Restore prosperity by creating multiple federal agencies to establish a proper balance and regulation of Supply Demand Prices Investment
