Genetic Profiling for Athletes By Lyndsay and Bronya
What is genetic profiling? Genetic profiling, also known as DNA profiling is the process of determining an individual’s DNA characteristics. It is simply the collection, processing and analyzing of VNTRs ( variable number tandem repeats)
How it works A sample of DNA is retrieved from the individual (from blood, saliva, semen, hair roots or body tissue, etc.) Extract the DNA from the nucleus of the cell Copy the DNA to make enough for a profile Determine the size of the STRs using a genetic analyzer Look for a match
What is it used for? DNA profiling is most commonly used as a forensic technique in criminal investigations. It is used to identify a person or to place a person at a crime scene. Genetic testing has also been used to help clarify paternity
Benefits Tests asses child's genetic potential for athletic success Directed towards individuals, coaches, parents, athletes and sports teams All it takes is a fee and a sample of saliva Supplies advanced genetic results on a child's predisposition for athletic success in speed/power or endurance sports. Show the way genetic traits contribute to athletic skills Uses DNA to aid in loss of fat, muscle gain, and getting in better shape for subjects
Issues Confidentiality risks Issues regarding different results reported coming from the same subjects If a company were to “go under”, there is no telling what to happen to all the subjects genetic information Technology used in tests is not yet advanced enough for results to be as accurate as possible Counseling is said to be recommended in advance to taking tests
