ASTRONOMY

Solar System Made up of a star and the planets, moons, and other celestial objects that are bound to orbit it due to gravity.

Did you know… The Solar System formed about 4.6 billion years ago and it’s estimated the Universe formed at least 15 billion years ago!

Galaxy Massive system made up of stars, star systems, star clusters, dust and gasses.

Universe All of space and everything in it.

Rotation The act of an object spinning on its axis.

Did you know… The Earth rotates at a speed of just over 1,000 miles/hour. THAT’S FAST!!

Revolution The act of one object moving around another object.

Geocentric Model that states the Earth is the center of the solar system. Aristotle believed in this model.

Heliocentric Model that states the Sun is the center of the solar system. Copernicus and Galileo believed in this model.

Did you know… The Sun is over 300,000 times larger than the Earth. It takes light from the Sun 8 minutes to reach Earth.

Axis An invisible line that runs from the north to south pole which the Earth rotates on.

Orbit The path an object takes around another object.

Gravity Force that pulls objects together.

Did you know… Because of less gravity, a person who weighs 100 kg on Earth would only weigh 38 kg on Mars. Force due to gravity

Inertia The resistance to change in motion.

Centripetal Force Force that causes an object to follow a curved path.

Music/Picture credit The song is the theme from Star Wars. The artist is Henry Mancini. All pictures are from Google images.
