Solar Energy is the conversion of sunlight into electrical energy.

How does sunlight convert into electricity?

Does Solar Energy work on a cloudy day? In Seattle, Washington, there is a per year average of… 150 Days of Rain 225 Cloudy Days 58 Days of Sun

Does Solar Energy work when it has snowed?

The Andasol Solar Power Station in Spain is a 50 MegaWatt power plant with a 7.5 hour battery. This battery consists of two tanks of molten salt thermal storage that helps the solar plant generate on-demand electricity in the evening, during rain or cloud cover. Total plant production is about 280,000 GWh per year – about enough power for 170,000 people. It covers almost 500 acres of land.

This solar plant in Tonopah, Nevada is designed to power up to 75,000 homes during peak electricity periods supplying 500,000 megawatt hours annually of clean, renewable electricity.

Advantages of Solar Energy

There is virtually an unlimited supply of solar energy for us to use making an inexhaustible energy resource. Our Sun will be usable for energy for another 1.5 – 3 billion years before it begins to become too hot for life to exist on the planet. Solar energy is an excellent alternative energy source because there is no pollution generated while it is being used, so we actually reduce pollution with every watt of power generated from the Sun.

There is no cost involved with using solar power other than the cost of manufacturing the components, purchasing and installation. After your initial investment, there is no further cost associated with its use. Solar energy systems are flexible and expandable. This means that you can start small with just one solar panel and then add more over time to meet your needs making a large project. By starting with a small project you can avoid a major investment up front.

Disadvantages of Solar Energy

Potentially large areas of land are required Potentially large areas of land are required for extensive solar energy projects.

Many places in the world doesn’t have enough constant and intense sunshine to make use of solar energy practical.

A disadvantage of this renewable energy source are the up front costs coupled with installing a system of solar panels. $$$
