Human Population Growth https://youtu.be/QsBT5EQt348 1. Will we run out of space? 2. How is studying human population growth important? 3. What outside factors should we consider when studying human population growth?
Population Growth 1. Explain the trends you see in the graph. 2. Would you expect the bacteria population to continue growing exponentially forever? Why or why not?
Population Growth Exponential Growth- Rapid growth of the population This type of growth occurs in bacteria for short amounts of time Not sustainable- eventually the organisms will run out of space, resources, food, mates, etc. Logistic Growth- Rapid growth of the population that levels off after the population reaches a certain size This type of growth is seen in all organisms over time As the organism run out of resources, their population stops growing as rapidly.
Exponential vs. Logistic Growth
Carrying Capacity Carrying capacity is the maximum number of organisms that can be supported in an environment Carrying capacity exists for all organisms BECAUSE there is a finite amount of resources Eventually food, water, space, mates, habitat will run out and the population will stop growing as rapidly
Factors Affecting Carrying Capacity 1. Density-dependent factors- factors that have a greater affect, the larger the population gets (i.e. depends on the density) Examples: Food, water, space, disease 2. Density-independent factors- factors that have the same affect no matter the size of the population (i.e. aren’t cause by density) Example: fire, tornados, flooding, earthquake
