Different Types of Communities HAMLET
HAMLET: A community with a population of fewer than 200 people. Example: ________________ Cambridge Bay
VILLAGE
VILLAGE: A community with a population of around 200 to 800 people. Example: Kars, Ontario
TOWN
TOWN: A community with a population of around 1000 to 10 000 people. Example: Richmond, Ontario
CITY
A community with a population greater than 10 000 people. Example: Kingston, Ontario
CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREA
CMA: A community with a population greater than 100 000 people, consisting of one or more adjacent municipalities centred on a large urban core. Example: Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
RESOURCE-BASED COMMUNITY
RESOURCE-BASED COMMUNITIES: Communities that are built around a primary resource. Example: SUDBURY, Ontario

RESIDENTIAL LAND USE: Land that is used for housing. Example: A house
TRANSPORTATION LAND USE
TRANSPORTATION LAND USE: The land that is used for transportation systems including parking lots and airports. Example: A Train Station
COMMERCIAL LAND USE
COMMERCIAL LAND USE: Land that is used for business activities. Example: A grocery store
INSTITUTIONAL LAND USE
INSTITUTIONAL LAND USE: The land that is occupied by schools, hospitals, places of worship and government offices. Example: South Carleton High School
INDUSTRIAL LAND USE
INDUSTRIAL LAND USE: That land that is occupied by factories, warehouses and other secondary industries. Example: Steel Mill Plant
OPEN SPACE LAND USE
OPEN SPACE LAND USE: The land that is left in its natural state. Example: A Conservation Area
RECREATIONAL LAND USE
RECREATIONAL LAND USE: The land that is used for recreational activities (playgrounds, parks and golf courses). Example: Richmond Fair Grounds
OTHER FACTORS AFFECTING LAND USE
ZONING Bylaws are laws that control the kind and amount of development in an area I.e. the city can’t build a garbage dump beside your house

Urban Expansion Cities grow and grow and grow and grow- due to increasing population and industry The growth of a city is called “Urban Sprawl” Due to the increase in ubran sprawl we are seeing “new urbanism” come into play
