Geography and Early Civilizations ET: How could physical geographic features impact how an early civilization developed? List as many as you can! Geography and Early Civilizations LT: I can begin to understand the different ways that geography influenced the development of early civilizations.

Geographic Impacts What sort of Geographic features do you think could impact early civilizations? In what ways could Geography impact the development of a civilization? Which features would provide benefits? Which features could limit a civilization?

Geographic Impacts Geographic features that could impact civilizations: Rivers Valleys Fertile lands Access to water Salt or fresh? Which would be more useful? Why? Are there any uses for the other type? Deserts Mountains

Geographic Impacts Location Geographic features could limit where people could settle and build cities.

Geographic Impacts Food: What food was available (plants or animals) What food could be grown

Geographic Impacts System of Government: Depending on where people could settle, the type of government was different Which would most likely have a more unified government: cities that were in a general area with easy access to each other or cities divided by physical features such as deserts or mountains? Why? How would the physical features lead to a more or less unified government?

Geographic Impacts Economics Different areas had different natural resources. Some would trade for other resources and use the seas and rivers as ‘highways’

Textbook activity/Gallery Walk Textbook packets One table at a time will go into the hall to finish the gallery notes. Everyone else will work on the Geography & Early Civilizations Packet.

Geographic Impacts Claim Response Choose TWO of the civilizations from the packet/textbook. (Ancient Sumer, Ancient Egypt, Ancient India, Ancient China, or Ancient Greece) Write a claim response answering this prompt: What was the most significant way that geography impacted the development of early civilizations? Consider location, food, government, or economics in your response. Your response should provide evidence and examples from at least TWO early civilizations.
