Grade 7 Science Unit 4: The earth’s Crust Rock and Mineral Resources Grade 7 Science Unit 4: The earth’s Crust

Rock and Mineral uses... Much of the exploration of the Earth’s crust is done for economic reasons. Some types of minerals, ores and rocks are sought and exploited. Refer to page 344 in text

Rock & mineral resources A resource is used for a specific purpose such as... Petroleum Metals Gems

Petroleum & Coal Made from the remains of once-living organisms. Used to make fuels, plastics, etc.

metals The most useful product from mineral resources. The most common being gold, silver, copper, iron, zinc, aluminum and nickel Used to make cars, computers, etc

gems Highly prized because they are rare and beautiful. Polished and use for jewellery. Diamonds are also used for scalpels, dental drills, etc.

Mining in nl Many communities have been established in NL for the purpose of extracting rocks for the minerals in them.

Mining in Nl... The past Iron ore (Bell Island) Copper (Buchan’s) Zinc (Daniel’s Harbour) Copper (Tilt Cove)

Mining in nl... The present Gold (Nugget Pond) Granite (Lumsden) Iron ore (Labrador City) Slate (Burgoyne’s Cove) Gypsum (Flat Bay)
