Go Geography! #15 – CNN10 No CEV’s today… Instead, list the main topics discussed in the CNN10 program as they are presented in the program After the program, explain what story or point of information you found most interesting or important and why.

Rules of Trade… Discuss the following questions in your table groups: How can trade be utilized to improve the economy of a country? What do you think a trade agreement is? Do you think trade agreements may be necessary for a society to prosper? Unnecessary? Explain.

Trading with Others… Each person gets as many chips as they can grab, in a reasonable manner. Red chips represent food supply, blue chips represent water supply, and yellow chips represent natural resources. Now, you get a country… In order for your country to prosper, you need an equal amount of resources. The more resources you can get, the better! You may trade with other countries to get the chips they need. However, if your country is not in a trade agreement with the country with which they plan to make the trade, they must pay a “tax” of an extra chip to the tax collector – Mr. Glueck!

Trading with Others Trade Groups: Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Canada Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Morocco Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela, The United States France, Spain, Russia, China, Japan, India, Portugal

Trading With Others Reflection… Did having trade groups make things easier/harder? What were some of the Pros/Cons of having these trade groups and restrictions?

Example of Major Trade Organization: NAFTA What is NAFTA?? NAFTA Explained – CNN Video Why is NAFTA viewed in a positive light? So why was NAFTA so controversial…?

Trade Organizations NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) An agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico that created the world’s largest free trade area Went into effect January 1, 1994, and has brought economic growth along with a higher standard of living for all three countries Immediately lifted tariffs on the majority of goods produced by the countries involved, among other measures

Trade Organizations CAFTA (Central America Free Trade Agreement) WTO Extension of NAFTA to include Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic Promotes stronger trade and investment ties, prosperity, and stability throughout the region WTO The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments to facilitate fair business transactions.

Trade Organizations: Graphic Organizer Use your notes, smart devices, and provided literature to find information on each of the areas in your Trade Agreements Graphic Organizer!
