Welcome to Naviance at Lowell High School CREATING A RESUME LHS Guidance Department Welcome! Today, we will be going into Naviance and showing you how to create a resume. If you haven’t been logging into Naviance regularly, now is a good time to start. Don’t forget, you can see important information and announcements from the guidance department in your Naviance account. Always check in to see if you have any emails from your guidance counselor. Complete activities like career surveys, college searches, personality inventories, etc. If you ever have any questions about Naviance, just ask your guidance counselor or visit the College and Career Center. Let’s get started on your resume.
What is the purpose of a resume? The purpose of a resume is to provide a summary of your skills, abilities and accomplishments. It is a quick advertisement of who you are It is a "snapshot" of you with the intent of capturing and emphasizing your experience, skills and interests. It is not an autobiography.
Why should you have a resume? Resumes are important to have for the following reasons: Part-time jobs Requesting recommendations College applications Scholarships Keeping track of all your activities/accomplishments
Getting Started Go to the Lowell High website: http://lhs.lowell.k12.ma.us Click on “Naviance” at the top right corner Select “Student Login” from the dropdown. Your Username and Password are your LHS ID # Type in your LHS ID# as your username and password. Then click “Log In.” You DO NOT need to click “I Need To Register” under the “Are You New Here Box.”
Log In:http://lhs.lowell.k12.ma.us Click “Naviance,” then “Student Login” Let’s start by going to the Lowell High Website (lhs.lowell.k12.ma.us). Then click on “Naviance” and then select “Student Login,” from the dropdown menu.
Log In LHS Student ID # LHS Student ID # Enter your LHS ID # as your username AND password. Then click “Log In” (Next slide)
About Me Tab About Me Tab The About Me Tab is the place where all of your personal information is stored. All of the results from your career interest and personality surveys are saved here. Your lists of careers and colleges that you are interested in are saved here. This is also where you will be able to keep track of all of the “tasks” that your guidance counselor has assigned to you, as well as your PSAT and SAT scores. TODAY, we will be working on your resume. Click on “resume” now.
There are several things to include on a resume There are several things to include on a resume. Click on the dropdown menu under “Add a New Entry.” You can pick from things like Objective, Summary, Work Experience, Education, Extracurricular Activities, and more. Once you select an item, a box will pop up asking for detailed information. The more specific you can be when entering information, the better. If you filled out the template we passed out in Advisory last week, it will be easier to add the information. If you didn’t fill out the form, you can still enter as much as you can today and then go back in later to finish your resume.
This is an example when you click on “Work Experience This is an example when you click on “Work Experience.” To the right, Naviance always provides tips for each part of a resume. Once you have entered all of the information for an entry, click on “Add to Resume.”
You will see that your entry has been added to your resume You will see that your entry has been added to your resume. Now, from the dropdown menu, select another entry to add. Continue to add entries until you have completed all of your information available.
This is an example of adding an extracurricular activity to your resume.
Once you have completed entering all of your information, click on the “Customize Your Printable Resumes” Tab.
When you are creating your first resume, you will see the option for “create a new print format.” Click on that now.
You will come to this screen You will come to this screen. Here, give your resume a name (this will not show when you print out your resume), choose a format, choose whether or not you want your references included or “references available upon request.” Then click the box of each entry that you want included on your resume when it prints. When you are done, click “Save and Close.”
From now on, when you click on the “customize your printable resumes” tab, you will see your resume listed. You can either click on the pencil icon to make edits or click on the printer icon to view and/or print your resume.

Important tips about your resume A resume is an important document that allows people to get to know you before an interview. Most careers require you to have an updated resume with all of your accomplishments listed. A resume serves as your first impression to an employer/college Resumes are very useful when it comes time for teacher recommendations. You should update your resume on a regular basis whenever you feel that you need to add something to it. A single mistake on a resume will be caught by someone reviewing it, so seek the help of your teachers for editing. Here are some final tips about your resume.
