Dental Hygiene Program of Study AAS Program Overview Dental Hygiene Program of Study Year 1 – Complete pre-reqs and additional application points Pre-reqs can be completed with a C- or higher A and B grades are more competitive than C Some courses A and B are worth the same points – see point sheet Complete Fall entry requirements Year 2 – Accepted students complete 1st year core courses and dental office experience. Year 3 – Accepted students complete 2nd year core courses and dental office experience – then they are eligible to take the licensing exams to become a Dental Hygienist

Bachelor Degree – OIT Students who complete all Associate of Applied Science degree requirements have the option to get their Bachelor of Science in DH online through Oregon Institute of Technology Students interested in completing a Bachelor’s degree can review Section 5 in the academic advising resource in Moodle for more information
Preparing to Apply Be admitted to Lane as a Credit Student with an assigned L number Be an Oregon Resident by date of application Exception is for LCSC students from Idaho. LCSC information is in Section 1 of the Academic Advising Resource Have screen testing completed Jan 1 or later for the year you are applying Attend mandatory application review session and get attendance form signed Form is located in Application Information packet All prerequisite courses completed with a letter grade of C- or higher Winter term or before - prior to planned Fall entry Courses completed at other institutions must be considered equivalent or substituted with an approved course before applying If students have completed a BA/BS degree from a US accredited institution full WR 121 points are granted (official transcripts are needed to verify this)

Application Timeline Application deadline is typically early Spring term for the following Fall entry Register for spring and summer courses that are required for Fall entry even though they cannot be listed on your application for points Courses taken and completed during Winter term may count toward application points Do not apply if Winter courses are in progress. Apply once the courses appear on a submitted transcript
Required Courses/ Transfer Information Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application PRIOR to submitting the application Please review the Transfer Advising Information in Section 4 of DH’s Academic Advising in Moodle if you: Have previous coursework that you think will be equivalent to or will substitute for the DH pre-reqs and program course requirements If you have prior math, writing or science courses and need an override to register for a subsequent course
Math sequence is : MTH 010, MTH 020, MTH 052 or MTH 060 Math Requirement MTH 052 or higher will meet the program and application requirement MTH 052 or higher courses meet the Science prerequisite requirement for BI11/CH112 Courses equivalent to MTH 020 meet the prerequisite requirement for MTH 052 Students wanting a Bachelors should choose MTH 060 in order to continue to go higher in math Math sequence is : MTH 010, MTH 020, MTH 052 or MTH 060
Chemistry Requirement Choice of: 1. CH 112 + BI 112 or 2. 5 credits in chemistry 100 level or higher CH 112 + BI 112 (known as Biobonds) Must be within 7 years Pre-req to BI 231- A&P 1 Typical for Lane students to complete these two classes 5 credits of chemistry 100 level or higher Typical for transfer students to complete this option if they already have the equivalent of BI 231 from another college Chemistry course for 4 credits + 1 lab credit = 5 credits – this counts
Preparing to take A&P 1 – BI 231 BI112 and CH112 courses are the pre-reqs for BI 231 – the first Anatomy and Physiology course Getting into BI 112/CH 112 – two options: Passing Lane’s math placement testing OR Passing MTH 052 or higher with a C- or higher Some students may have coursework that will allow them to meet the pre-req for BI112/CH112 or BI 231 Read Section 4 (How to use the Transfer Tool) in the Academic Advising section in Moodle for more detailed instructions

BI 234 Microbiology This course must be completed by the end of the Summer term in order to start Fall term Course is eligible for additional points in the application BI 234 must be completed within 7 years of Fall entry Fall 2009 would meet Fall 2016 criteria Fall 2010 would meet Fall 2017 criteria BI 231,232&, 233 are the required prerequisites
FN 225 and FN 240 Nutrition These two courses meet an application and program requirement Other FN numbered courses at Lane do not meet the requirement Instructors recommend that FN 225 is taken after completion of a chemistry course Students who struggle in this course typically have not taken a chemistry course FN 240 – has a required chemistry pre-requisite
English Composition Sequence WR 121 is required to apply WR 115 is the prerequisite for WR 121 WR 123 or 227 meets a program requirement Eligible for points on the application One of these courses must be completed by the end of Summer term for Fall entry WR 122 is the prerequisite course for WR 123. However, WR 122 is not accepted on the application WR 121 is the prerequisite course for WR 122, 123 or 227 Students with a BA/BS will get full points for WR 121, but will need to contact the coordinator, Sharon Hagan, to determine a transfer course that will meet WR 123/227 Degree must be verified by submitting a US accredited college transcript
PSY 201, 202 or 203 General Psychology PSY 201, 202 or 203 meet the Psychology course requirement Only one of these is required to apply Students who are ready to take WR 121 or who have completed WR 115 are more likely to be successful in these courses PSY 201 is recommended prior to taking 202 or 203 PSY 201 is available the most in the Fall term
SOC 204, 205, or 206 General Sociology SOC 204, 205 or 206 meets the Sociology course requirement Only one of these is required to apply. Students who are ready to take WR 121 or who have completed WR 115 are more likely to be successful in these courses There is no recommended sequence SOC 204 is available the most in the Fall term, 205 in Winter, and 206 in Spring
Speech/COMM Course COMM 100 Basic Communication or COMM 111 Public Speaking The COMM prefix replaced SP starting Summer 2014 Only one course is required to apply COMM 218 - Interpersonal Communication will not meet this requirement
Screening Test for Points The HOBET Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test - can be taken one time per year See application for dates this is offered A minimum score and testing fee is required More information about this test can be found at the Lane Placement testing website - see HOBET test link on the left hand side Screening test is subject to change so it’s important to check in with us
Spanish Proficiency or Course options Students can earn additional application points by meeting the Spanish Proficiency criteria Complete SPAN 102 or higher with a pass grade or grade of C- or higher OR Complete with a score of 50 or higher the CLEP College Level Equivalency Placement test offered at the University of Oregon Official test scores must be submitted with application Spanish is not an entry requirement – it is for additional application points only
Paid Work experience in a Dental Office Students may be eligible for application points for any Paid Work Experience in a Dental Office Verified 960 hours or more are eligible for points A form signed by your supervisor must be submitted with application
Frequently Asked Questions Q: What kind of grades do I need to be competitive? A: To be competitive you need to have as strong of a GPA as possible on the prerequisites. Earning additional application points is recommended to be competitive. Q: Should I repeat courses? A: The decision is your choice, but repeating courses could affect your financial aid. Repeating the anatomy courses could affect your competitiveness. Email us and Financial Aid to learn more about the effects of repeating courses. Q: What can I expect from the screening test? A: Information about the test is provided on the Testing Office’s website.
FAQ Continued Q: What happens after the applications are submitted? A: Register for classes required for Fall entry and you will be notified in mid May about your application status. Q: I am having trouble doing the application – where can I go for help? A: Please read over Section 1 in Moodle for information about how to do the online application. Help with Adobe can be obtained in the ATC (building 2). Your advising team can answer questions, but cannot sit and do the application with you. Email your concerns to DHProgram@lanecc.edu Q: How long is the waiting list? A: There is no waiting list. Students are either accepted, placed on an alternate list or not accepted.
Tips for Success Don’t do this alone. Ask for help (use tutoring, advisors, counselors) Consider less than full-time status. Take your time to perform well in each class Do informational interviews-see if this is what you really want Get work in the Health Care field to see what opportunities exist in the medical world Seek advising the second or third week of the term to check- in and get updates – typically this is the slowest time of each term Register early to help with your term-by-term planning and to gain access to high demand courses
