Discovery Program Cardiac Care Unit Western Health

Our Unit The Western Health Cardiology Unit provides services across both the Footscray and Sunshine Campus’ Footscray CCU is a 20 bed unit comprising of 4 Acute Beds and 16 Telemetry / Surgical Beds (including Vascular) Sunshine CCU is a 26 bed unit comprising of 6 Acute Beds and 20 Telemetry / Surgical Beds We have 100+ staff that rotate across both sites with each unit supported by a 24 hour on call cardiac catheterization laboratory for acute angioplasty service Nursing Staff profile: Postgraduate students GNP’s on rotation Discovery Students CNS’s and experienced grade 2 RN’s Cardiac Rehab Nurses Clinical Nurse Educators

Discovery Program Clinical orientation and introduction to higher level aspects of cardiac care nursing 6 formal study days & 1 day in Cath Lab 1:1 clinical teaching a group sessions Work packages and specialised programs Central monitoring station and telemetry Bedside monitors and module setup Emergency Resuscitation Trolleys Non-Invasive Ventilation (CPAP) Emergency intubation equipment IV cannulation and ABG sampling

Acute Cardiac Cases Cardiac care management with advanced physical assessment skills AMI & acute coronary care management AMI with APO Arrhythmias with haemodynamic instability Pharmacology for the cardiac patient Cardiac Pacing Elective DC (direct current) electrical cardioversion Exposure to emergency situations – supported member of the hospital “Code Blue” team

Lectures and Tutorials Formal and informal lectures and tutorials and practical workshops include Basic ECG interpretation Advanced physical assessment of the cardiac patient Clinical problem solving an discussion CXR interpretation Cardiac medications including inotropes and vasoactive drugs Interventional cardiology – Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), temporary and permanent cardiac pacing, automatic internal cardiac (AICD) insertion and pericardialcentesis Supernumerary rotation to the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory Case Presentations

Pathway to Postgraduate Studies CCU Discovery Program (12 months temporary contract with opportunity to extend and commit to postgraduate studies) Clinical consolidation following on from Discovery Program (2 year temporary contract) – work towards advanced ECG interpretation / ALS / develop clinical leadership skills (preceptorship / consolidate clinical experience ) During this time plan & review career options and preparation for further studies PG Diploma in Cardiac Nursing in partnership with Latrobe University (over 12 to 18 months) Total timeline Discovery to Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiac Nursing – 3 years (permanent contract offered on completion of Post Graduate Certificate in Cardiac Nursing)
