World War II: 1939-1945

The Sides Allies Axis Britain France U.S. Soviet Union Japan Germany Italy

France June 22nd, 1940 France surrenders to Germany France signs an armistice agreement in the same railway car that Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles

Battle of Britain 1940 Britain is bombed by the German air force (Luftwaffe) Radar and cryptanalyst helps Britain fight back and Britain does not fall to Germany.

Battle of Stalingrad 1942 One of the bloodiest battles in human history. Total deaths are between one and two million people. Turning point on the eastern front. Germany starts retreating back towards Germany after Stalingrad.

The Battle of Midway 1942 Japanese are very successful in the Pacific. U.S. uses cryptanalyst to help surprise the Japanese at the battle of Midway. U.S. sinks four Japanese airplane carriers. U.S. wins the battle of Midway and will start to turn the Japanese back towards Japan.

D-Day June 6, 1944 British and Canadian divisions invade France at Sword, Juno, and Gold. U.S. forces land at Utah and Omaha. U.S. forces suffer heavy losses at Omaha beach. The invasion is successful and Allied forces start pushing towards Germany.

The end of war in Europe In May 1945, Russian troops are fighting to take control of Berlin. Adolf Hitler takes his own life. Karl Donitz, Hitler’s hand picked successor, ordered German troops to cease operations on May 7th, 1945.

War in the Pacific U.S. troops face difficult fighting at Okinawa and Iwo Jima. U.S. suffers high loss of life, but controls the two islands. Because of heavy U.S. losses at Okinawa and Iwo Jima, U.S. president Harry Truman uses the atomic bomb in August on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Holocaust Hitler’s “final solution” Camps are set up to hold Jewish people. The Jewish people in the camps are used for labor and millions are killed.

Concentration camps

Superpowers The U.S. and Soviet Union are economically and militarily strong at the end of WWII. Because both countries are superpowers and due to tensions during the war, the U.S. and Soviet Union become enemies after WWII.
