Germany Struggling French occupied the Ruhr, inflation, hatred of the Weimar Republic, political chaos, mounting discontent; Hitler and the NSDAP felt NOW was their time!

Where did Hitler get the idea to perpetrate a PUTSCH? From Benito Mussolini’s infamous March on Rome!

Why? Hitler and the NSDAP needed support from the Bavarian people and the Bavarian government for a LATER march upon Berlin to seize power!

What happened? Hitler entered the Burgerbraukeller beer hall in Munich around 8:30PM on November 8, 1923; Hitler fired a shot, announced the natiional revolution had begun, and began addressing the crowd

Famous Hofbrauhaus Beer Hall in Munich (Hitler gave speeches here)

Who was present? Among the 3,000 people were all the important political leaders of Bavaria, 3 in particular; Hitler forced the 3 into a nearby room and at gunpoint, forced them to cooperate with him

What eventually happened? The night and morning was filled with confusion among government officials, police, and armed forces over loyalties, and the putsch had lost its steam

In the end… The government ordered the police to fire on Hitler’s men to stop the putsch; 16 Nazi party members were killed

What happened to Hitler? He was arrested, charged with high treason, and sentenced to 5 years in Landsberg prison (he only served 8 months)

Effects of the Putsch Adolf Hitler and the Nazis received national attention, considered a propaganda victory! Hitler discovered that if he wanted power in Germany, he would need to get it legally, by the book!
