CHILD DEVELOPMENT The Course Structure Coursework – Represents 50% of the GCSE Short Task. (Controlled Assessments) form 25% of the total GCSE mark – all work is completed in class under exam conditions – understanding equipment & nutritional needs of children from birth to 5 years (RO19) Child Study Task forms 25% of the total GCSE mark –– you will need to visit the child on several occasions to complete organised activities with him/her which are then written up. (R020)
CHILD DEVELOPMENT The Course Structure Exam Written examination forms 50% of the total GCSE mark. Single entry tier, 1hour 15minutes paper – variety of short & long answer responses – 1 essay question Exam is based on all the core work covered over the course
Core Work The course covers the following 5 main topics Reproduction & Roles & Responsibilities of Parenthood Understanding Antenatal care & preparation for Birth Understanding Postnatal checks, postnatal provision & conditions for development of the child Understand how to identify, manage & prevent childhood illnesses Child Safety
CHILD DEVELOPMENT Will I be suitable for the course? Have an interest in human biology, social development and nutrition Understand that the course is theory based with a high degree of written work required Want to work with children in the future Can work independently and keep to deadlines Have access to a child (between 6 months and 5 years old) to complete your case study on – not a sibling
The study is split into 3 areas Unit R019: Understand the equipment & nutritional needs of children from birth to five years The study is split into 3 areas Understand the key factors when choosing equipment for babies from birth to 5 Know the nutritional guidelines and requirements Be able to investigate and develop feeding solutions
Unit R020: Understand the development of a child from birth to five years The study is split into 4 areas Understand the physical, intellectual & social development norms from birth to 5 Understand the benefits of learning through play Be able to plan different play activities for a chosen development area Be able to carry out & evaluate different play activities Each student MUST have access to a child between the age of 6months to 5 years at the start of the study. It is the student or his/her families responsibility to arrange this access.
