Concept and Abstraction The Third Meeting Concept and Abstraction

Concept Concept is a mental sign whereby we grasp a certain essence ( a mental sign of the essence) Example: summer house, tennis club relation, situation, car

Example of Networking concept Map

Concept,Word and sentence Concept is the small unit of intellection which becomes the elements of judgment in a sentence.

Distinction between concept and the essence The concept signifies what is understood by the mind insofar as it is in the mind Examples: “Man” or “horse” The essence is the intelligible aspect of reality that is grasped by the mind. It is the manner of being of a thing Example “continent” or “triange”

Concept signifies the essence of things Essence means any intelligible property of things, and not just the nature of a substance Examples: “redness” or “roundness” of the ball so, the concept signifies what a thing is

Clear concept When it signifies an essence accurately Example: We understand clearly what a “door” or “ hand”

Vague concept When we do not have enough knowledge to be able to formulate judgment about it Examples: Hyperboles, aminoacid

Erroneous concept Not because it makes false affirmation but because some intelligible notes are mistakenly attributed to it Examples; A wrong idea of freedom A wrong idea of the nature of man

Concept and Image Image refers to the sensible aspect of reality, whereas the concept refers to the intelligible aspect. Examples: Yellow

Concept and Reality Concept makes us know reality Examples” “turtle”

Abstraction Abstrare means taking out from the concrete object. That is why it is important to illustrate general ideas with concrete examples

Example of the abstract art

Kinds of abstraction Total abstraction It signifies the whole subject Example: Man or animal Formal abstraction it consists in considering the form of subject Humanity, goodness, sanctity, wisdom
