R. Buckminster Fuller 1895-1983

Objective To outline the life of Buckminster Fuller To describe his accomplishments To relate back to his design principles

Who was he? Buckminster Fuller wasn’t a designer rather Buckminster Fuller wasn’t just a designer

His Claim to Fame…the Geodesic Dome Uses lightweight plastic in the shape of a tetrahedron Is capable of sustaining its own weight Is low cost and easy to transport and build Utilized heavily by the US military and is the staple for the Montreal World Expo 67

Other Designs Dymaxion Car: His dome design influenced the design of the modern soccer ball revieled in the 1970 World Cup Dymaxion Car: seats 11, provided high mileage and ran on 3 wheels

Dymaxion Map: Dymaxion House Accurate view of the world Accurate to 2% Meant to revolutionize the housing industry Made of stamped sheet metal Heating and cooling done naturally Power delivered via diesel generator

Design Philosophy and Principles His designs focused around being more efficient and lower cost Design principle: “Ephemeralization” which translates to …Doing More With Less

Fuller wanted to improve society “[I] sought to discover what a little, unknown, moneyless, creditless individual with dependents could do effectively on behalf of all humanity that inherently could never be done by any nations or capital enterprise” “It seems perfectly clear that when there is enough to go around man will not fight any more than he now fights for air. When man is successful in doing so much more with so much less he can take care of everybody at a higher standard.”

"We know now what we could never have known before-that we now have the option for all humanity to 'make it' successfully on this planet in this lifetime. Whether it is to be Utopia or Oblivion will be a touch-and-go relay race right up to the final moment."
