Traveling Seeds

How do you think seeds travel? Why do seeds travel? Seeds need to travel in order to survive. It is an adaptation for them! Seeds cannot travel on their own. They need help from other things in the environment. How do you think seeds travel?

How did the seeds get to this field?

Let's take a closer look at the ways seeds travel.

Seeds can travel by sticking. Some seeds have small hooks on them that allow them to attach to animal fur or clothes. When the seeds come off they fall to the ground.

See how the seeds stick to this person’s shoe!

Seeds can travel by flying. When the wind blows, seeds come off the plant and fly in the wind. When the wind stops, the seeds fall to the ground.

Seeds travel by popping. Some seeds pop out of their pods and fall to the ground.

Seeds travel by being carried and buried. Some animals, like birds and squirrels, pick up seeds and carry them or bury them in different places.

Name the ways seeds travel. Some seeds have hooks on them that allow them to attach to animal fur or clothes. Some seeds are able to float in water. Some seeds are light and have wings or thin hairs that allow them to be carried away by wind. Some seeds are eaten by animals and deposited in areas away from the parent plants.

Now, use your How Seeds Travel booklet and complete it by illustrating different ways seeds travel.
