Discussion Points The following scenarios are designed to promote discussion. There are no totally right answers.

Scenario A player castles using two hands and presses his clock. He has already left his king in check. The arbiter informs the player that he has lost the game. The player wishes to complain and appeal the decision. What should you do?

Scenario A parent complains that her son’s game is attracting too much attention from friends of his opponent. What do you do?

Scenario At move 35 for White it is discovered that an illegal move was played by Black at move 18. The digital clocks currently show White: 05.40 Black: 12.27 The time control was all moves in 90 minutes with 30 second increments. The round started at 10.00 and the next round is at 15.00 How do you deal with this game and the clock settings?

Scenario A player complains that his opponent is wandering about the playing hall too much. What do you do?

Scenario A player is a doctor on call. He asks if he can have his phone on as he may have to return to work. What is your decision?

Scenario A player of mature years has been living on his increment for some time. He asks that he be given a toilet break. What is your answer? Are there situations where your answer would be different?

Scenario You have a visually impaired player. You have set aside a table for him which he will use every round. This table is near the edge of the playing area. The player complains and states that he wants to be put in his ‘proper’ seat based on his score every round. What is your decision?

Scenario A player takes ill during a game. He would like some time to recover. What is your decision?

Scenario White asks if he can castle in this position. What is your answer?

Scenario A player has stopped his clock and calls you over. He tells you he wants to promote to a rook. You give him the piece requested and restart his clock. After a few seconds he promotes to a queen. Do you do anything? What actions if anything could you have taken to prevent this situation from arising?

Scenario A player loses his game and, in a fit of temper, scatters the pieces all over. This obviously disturbs other nearby games. What action do you take, if any?
