Direct Your Future™ Module 2: Mapping The Future

Module 2 Objectives At the end of this module, you will be able to: Describe at least three ways in which work will be different for you, as compared to that of your grandparents, parents, or other adults. State and describe at least three characteristics of career planning in the 21st century. Direct Your Future 2-2

Module 2 How Occupations Have Changed New occupations appearing, old ones disappearing. Impact of the computer and the Internet on almost all jobs. Products customized, made, and/or delivered “just in time.” More jobs in service, fewer in manufacturing. Occupations require more education and skills. Direct Your Future 2-3

Module 2 How Employers Have Changed Lay off workers if they are not needed. May contract for work in other countries. May hire temporary or part-time workers. May reduce number of “middle managers.” May merge with one or more companies. May avoid employer-provided benefits. Direct Your Future 2-4

Module 2 How Workers Have Changed More diverse in every way. Less loyal to employer. May change jobs frequently. Often need to acquire new skills. May work from home via computer. May start their own business. Direct Your Future 2-5

Module 2 How Career Planning Has Changed High school education not enough – need postsecondary education in some form. Need transferable skills. Need to assume responsibility for career planning and financial stability. Need to know how to cope with change. Need computer and business skills. Direct Your Future 2-6

Module 2 Homework for Next Session Activity 4: Decision Making in My Life Record five decisions you recently made. Summarize the alternatives, information considered, and results of each decision. Complete the worksheet for the next session. Direct Your Future 2-7
