Learning goal Students will be able to create a sculptural, unconventional teapot, in clay, using Pinch, Coil, and Slab techniques with reference to the ceramicist Richard Notkin.

Parts of a teapot

Body, lid, handle, spout, foot Body: where the liquid (water) is stored for producing tea. Lid: used to access the body of the vessel, usually with a knob. Handle: part of the vessel to be held and used to pour to vessel. Spout: Part of the vessel used to pour the liquid from the body to a cup. Foot: Used to raise to vessel for decoration and to be able to be glazed underneath.

Richard notkin “More Interested in conveying ideas than tea.” – Richard Notkin He is a ceramics artist based out of Montana, born in 1946. His work focuses on his frustration with War and the teapot is used as a vehicle to convey his ideas. Instead of using typical imagery depicted on Yixing Teapots, he uses Skulls, Dice, Explosions, Thunderbolts, and Hearts. His work is globally recognized and he continues to exhibit and perform workshops all of the world.

Yixing, china Richard Notkin’s teapots paid homage to the teapots from Yixing, China. These teapots were a large part of the Chinese culture for brewing tea for their tea ceremonies. Original Chinese, Yixing clay is a red clay found in the Jiangsu province of China that makes an exceptional teapot. These teapots "season," which means they take on the flavor of your favorite tea to enhance every cup. But they should only be used for one type of tea (white, green, black, oolong, herbal), since they soak in the richness of whichever type is used. Chinese Yixing Teapots are considered by some connoisseurs as the best possible way to steep tea. Notkin has been recognized for his homages to the teapots world wide. He has solo exhibition shows on a yearly basis.
