LET’S REVIEW… WHAT IS DENOTATION? Denotation is the ……… If a word DENOTES something, that means the word is being used in its ______________ sense. Felipe rose at 6 a.m. to eat breakfasT. Denotative or connotative? Felipe’s grades had risen with his work in class.

What is connotative? When a word has a connotative meaning, that means…. Connotative words have 3 types of feelings. They are… What is the feeling of the underlined word? When Jaime robbed the bank, he knew he was risking getting locked up.

How do we determine feeling? Where do we look to figure out the feeling of the word? Look at the following sentences. Write down, in your notes, what kind of connotation they have, positive, negative or neutral. Maria took the new highway to the store. Jose felt sick from driving on the bumpy country road to the market. Luis’ car broke down in the back alley of Walmart. Jeanette lives on the street next to the high school. How are the DENOTATIONS of these words the same? How are the CONNOTATIONS different?

Today… how do we recognize the power of the words? Words that have connotative meanings also have IMMENSE power. Power means that they can create emotions in people, hurt feelings, inspire confidence, and overall, trigger a response. Words that have power are used in everyday speech, by politicians, in advertisements, and more

How do we recognize the power of the word? Read the following example. During World War II, Jewish people were forced into concentration camps. Talk to your partners and answer these questions on your notes. What kind of feeling does the word forced have? How is it connected to a sense of power? Would the sentence have the same feeling if we changed the word forced with placed?

What are the clues to a word’s power? If we look at the sentence again, we can find some clues- just like last time when we used clues to find feeling. During World War II, Jewish people were forced into concentration camps. The clues are in the context, that means the other words of the sentence. World War II- NOT a good time for Jewish people Concentration camps- took away people’s freedoms FORCED has a POWERFUL, negative connotation because it means the loss of a person’s freedom, against their choice

THEN, write two LOADED or POWERFUL words of your own. Now you try it… On the next slide, look for the POWERFUL and LOADED meanings of the words. Look for the CONNOTATIVE feelings and how the words are used. FIRST, list the denotation for each word. THEN, put the words in order from MOST POSITIVE (number 1) to LEAST POSITIVE (meaning MOST negative…) THEN, write two LOADED or POWERFUL words of your own.

Example: 3. thin 4. bony 1. slim 5. anorexic 2. slender The denotation is THIN because all these words mean thin or skinny. I have put them in order by which ones seem the most positive FIRST. Checking for understanding Let’s see what you’ve learned so far.. On your notes, or a separate piece of paper, answer to following questions. What is a denotative definition? What is a connotative definition? What 3 kinds of feeling can a word have? Where do I need to look to figure out connotative feeling and meaning?
