Spotlight on Careers in the Engineering Sector

Manchester is a thriving city with expected growth over the next 10 years Finding the Right Fit

What skills are employers looking for? Employers want people with “softer” skills and qualities as well as strong academic or vocational qualifications. These can include: Finding the Right Fit

Spotlight on the Engineering Sector Engineering combines maths and science to provide solutions to people, businesses, and society. Engineers are problem-solvers, looking at ways in which issues may be improved, with a solutions-based approach. The sector is mainly spread across mechanical, chemical, civil, electrical and manufacturing engineering. Engineering contributes 26% of the UK’s GDP, more than that of the retail, wholesale, financial and insurance sectors combined. It is forecast that engineering will need to recruit 265,000 skilled entrants annually to meet demand through to 2024. The average salary for UK engineers across all sectors in 2017 is £48,197. Finding the Right Fit

What jobs are available in the Engineering sector? Environmental engineer Aerospace or aeronautical engineer Mechanical engineer Software engineer Biomedical engineer Marine engineer Civil or structural engineer Electrical or electronic engineer Chemical engineer Energy engineer Materials engineer Finding the Right Fit

What is the apprenticeship route into the Engineering sector? An apprenticeship is a real job with training that will enable you to earn as you learn whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification The qualifications you gain on an apprenticeship are equivalent to the following GCSE’s and A Levels: Intermediate Level 2 5 GCSE passes at grades A* to C Advanced Level 3 2 A level passes Higher Level 4,5,6 and 7 Foundation degree and above Degree Level 6 and 7 Bachelor’s or master’s degree There are many apprenticeship qualifications in the engineering sector, including: Building Services Design Engineering  Rail Engineering Operative Civil Engineering  Military Engineer Digital Engineering Technician  Accident Repair Technician Gas Engineering  Nuclear Engineer Network Engineer  Land-based Service Engineer Finding the Right Fit

Case Study: Tauran – Civil Engineer I’m Tauran, a Civil Engineer (MCIPS) in Manchester City Council’s Highways Team. I attended Bradford University and did a masters in Civil and Structural Engineering, whilst working part-time. To start with, my day to day activities included maintaining pot holes, liaising with contractors and working with subcontractors. I then chose to move to the Highways Team to further my development. To do my role, I need communication skills with the willingness to learn. At first, it was intimidating as I knew little about the role, but with the support and guidance of my colleagues my confidence grew. I like that there are opportunities to further my development with a range of courses. I have been able to complete a Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) so I can achieve a higher level of Engineering and have the possibility of going into Project Management in the future. Anyone who is considering doing an Apprenticeship shouldn’t feel pressured, take your time to choose the right Apprenticeship for you. An apprenticeship is a real job with training that will enable you to earn as you learn whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Finding the Right Fit
