Structure of the Canadian Federal Govt

Constitutional Monarchy Canada has its own constitution… but we still recognize the British monarch as our head of state Parliamentary Democracy Relationship = more historically symbolic than for political reasons Constitution (DEMOCRATIC) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgBBfM8SYPA (Civix Canada’s democratic Govt) Political parties are elected into Parliament. The Party with the most seats/MPs forms the government party

The Canadian Parliamentary System The branches work together to govern Canada

Legislative Branch Composed of: House of Commons = elected representatives (MPs) from ridings across Canada Senate = Chosen by the GG on recommendation from the PM Debates, makes, and amends laws GG= reps queen/king

Executive Branch Composed of: PM = head of majority party Cabinet= selected from the majority part by the PM Applies govt decisions and laws Cabinet = approx 30, at least one from every prov/terr

Judicial Branch Consists of: Supreme Court of Canada Provincial Courts Separate from Legislative and Executive branch Enforces laws Separate because: courts need to interpret and make judgments on laws without interference from the govt BECAUSE the government must also follow the laws it create and can be involved in court cases (BIAS- if govt had control of judicial branch)
