East Africa facing hunger Cave rescue Full lesson plan from redcross.org.uk/education Full lesson plan from redcross.org.uk/education 1

Thai cave rescue – timeline 2018 23 June – 12 boys from the Wild Boars football team and their coach head to Tham Luang Caves to explore, following a football practice. They only planned to explore for an hour, but were caught in the cave by fast rising flood waters. These blocked their exit and so they had to head further into the caves. Worried parents head to the cave when the boys don’t return home as expected. They raise the alarm when they find their bikes and bags at the mouth of the cave. 28 June – Local rescue teams are joined by international experts to try and locate and rescue the boys from the cave system. Nobody knew if they were alive at this point. 2 July – Two British divers finally find the group alive, sheltering on a ledge above the flooded caves. They were 2,950m into the cave system and almost 1km below ground. Emergency supplies begin to be taken in to the group by specialist dive teams. 6 July – A diver from the Thai Navy Seals died whilst taking oxygen to the group when his own oxygen ran out. 7 July – After failing to put in a phone link to the group, divers instead begin to take letters between the group and their relatives on the surface. 10 July – The last of the group is freed from the cave by specialist dive teams escorting them through the maze of flooded and pitch black caves back to the surface.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine. Please tell Yod to take me out to a fried chicken shop.” “I love you father and mother and Toy. If we can get out, please can you take me to eat at a pan-fried pork restaurant? I love you.” “Don’t worry that I am missing for two weeks, I will help you at the shop soon.” “I’m fine but it’s a little bit cold. Don’t worry and don’t forget my birthday.” “Don’t worry about us now, I miss everyone. I want to go back now.” “Teacher, please don't give us too much homework!”
