What’s the Deal? The cost of removing lead hazards exceeds resources Lead problem in Detroit is pervasive Pre-1978 Houses continue to poison Too many children go untested Landlords continue to operate with impunity The cost of removing lead hazards exceeds resources Young children continue to get poisoned

Elevated Blood Lead Level Detroit Overview ~59,755 kids under 6 ~We estimate that 4,000 Detroit children are lead-poisoned…close to 10% ~Only 38% of kids are getting tested EBL = Elevated Blood Lead Level

The Latest on Flint ~33,109 CHILDREN UNDER 6 ~201 CHILDREN UNDER 6 WITH ELEVATED BLL ~Wrap around services for all kids ~MDHHS has been abating lead paint hazards in homes along with lead service lines ~CDC has mandated that all children under 6 be tested by Spring 2016

The Effect of Lead Poisoning Lead damages the brain It can cause: Learning difficulties Behavior problems Violent tendencies Hyperactivity ADHD-type symptoms Speech & Hearing loss A lead poisoned child is: - 7 times more likely to drop out of high school - 6 times more likely to enter the juvenile justice system - 50% more likely to do poorly on the MEAP achievement test. 10 Tips to Prevent Lead Poisoning Have all children under six tested annually Feed kids a healthy diet and avoid fatty foods Wash kids hands frequently Take shoes off at the door Wet clean weekly

10 Tips to Prevent Lead Poisoning Don’t let children play in bare soil Use only cold tap water to make bottles; let water run for one minute before using Do not repair or remodel home without checking for lead Make sure those working with autos, batteries, bullets change clothes before holding kids HELP SPREAD THE WORD!
