Literary Analysis Definition A literary analysis carefully examines a text, or one element of a text, such as character, setting, plot or theme of a story.

Story Elements Defined Setting- where and when the story takes place. Characters- are the people in the story. Some characters are more developed than others. Plot-sequence of events in a story. The plot contains a problem that the main character needs to solve. Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution are all parts of the plot. Theme- an important message about life that the author wants readers to understand. A story can have more than one theme.

Then, write a short explanation explaining why you feel that way.

Plot Elements Setting Time and place in which a story happens. Conflict The problems or struggle in the story Characters Main and minor characters’ whose thoughts and actions greatly impact the plot Point of View The perspective from which the story is told.  Theme The main message or main idea of the story. 

Plot Elements Exposition The introduction of the setting, characters, and conflict.  Rising Action Events that build to the point of greatest suspense Climax Moment of greatest suspense, or turning point Falling Action Events that occur after the climax Resolution Wrap it up- what is the theme, how did characters change, what's the lesson?

Literary Analysis Writing Task You have read the short story, "Amigo Brothers," which focuses on the power of true friendship. The text develops the theme that true friendship will always triumph over competition.   Directions: Write/Type an essay that demonstrates how this theme is developed through the character's words and actions. Use evidence from the text to support your response. This is a graded assignment.   You may write your essay on lined paper, or type in a separate Office 365 Word Document. Share your essay- kgillespie@wtps.org Essays should be completed in paragraph form (intro paragraph, body paragraph/s, and conclusion paragraph) Check for complete sentences and capitalization/punctuation.

Theme Theme is a lesson about life the author wants to share with the reader. An author may state a theme openly, but more often, readers must find and identify theme on their own. M E B Analysis Structure Introduction  includes the introductory statement which introduces the title, author, and text type and a clear thesis statement which presents a plan for the essay. Body Paragraphs/Sentences   Each body paragraph starts with a topic sentence that includes a controlling idea. Evidence from the text supports the writer’s analysis. Direct quotes from the text provide evidence for the analysis. Transition words/phrases- connect ideas. Conclusion  Restates thesis and sums up the writer’s ideas.        B            M              E

Intro Statement In the short story, “Amigo Bothers” by Piri Thomas, Thesis Statement One significant theme is that true friendship can triumph over competition. Exposition Characters- Antonio and Felix- lifelong friends and dedicated boxers Setting= Bronx, NY Conflict- Both Characters work hard to train, and now they must face one another in the ring. Intro Paragraph- Have you ever wondered if a friendship could be ruined by competition? Well that's exactly what characters Antonio and Felix experienced. Both boys had lived and trained in the Bronx for years, but now they were faced with their biggest match...against each other! In the short story, "Amigo Brothers" by Piri Thomas, one significant theme is that true friendship can triumph over competition. The author develops this theme through the actions and dialogue of the characters.

Body Paragraph/s Each body paragraph starts with a topic sentence that includes a controlling idea. Evidence from the text supports the writer’s analysis. Direct quotes from the text provide evidence for the analysis. Transition words/phrases- connect ideas.

Conclusion Paragraph/s The conclusion paragraph restates the thesis and wraps up the author's ideas.

If you are missing the Newsela “Reagan Challenger Speech” assignment, log onto Newsela and search “Reagan Challenger Speech” Complete 5 annotations, write activity, and quiz. If you are missing “Local News” go to our class webpage to “Reading Comprehension Resources.” There is a local news link…open that link and follow the directions. Read any local news story and complete the sentence frames.  2. If all assignments are up to date, log onto Newsela and read an article of your choice, or you may choose to do extra Independent Reading or Software.
