You can measure the mass of an object using a Triple Beam Balance.

There are two ways to get the volume of an object. Measure the displacement of fluid by the object in a graduated cylinder in [mL]. (Irregular shaped objects) Calculate the volume of a rectangular object using V = L x W x H by measuring each side in [cm].

How to Read a Graduated Cylinder To read the water level on a graduated cylinder, you have to get on eye level with the bottom of the meniscus.

20 Minutes! Density Inquiry lab At the lab tables, there is a Graduated Cylinder and some objects. For this activity, you will find the MASS of each object, then write these masses in your notebook. You will then find the VOLUME of each object by measuring the amount of water displaced in a GRADUATED CYLINDER of each cube. Write this in your notebook. You will then determine the DENISTY of each cube by dividing the MASS by the VOLUME. Show all of the calculations in your notebook.

Let’s recreate the lab in your IAN notebook for practice. Notebook practice Let’s recreate the lab in your IAN notebook for practice. On the graduated cylinders pictures, label one 100 mL cylinder INITIAL VOLUME, and the other one FINAL VOLUME. Pick one of your object from lab. Shade the Initial Cylinder to the mark you had in the lab before adding the object. Next shade the second to the mark you had AFTER adding the object. Explain on the top of the page how you measured the VOLUME of your object and how you calculated the DENSITY using this volume.

Review There are several objects (red letters) within the column above. When I call on you, be able to determine if they are LESS DENSE, MORE DENSE, or the SAME DENSITY as other substances in the column.

Notebook Practice In your notebook, DRAW the rocks where you see them in the picture on your Graduated Cylinder Cuts that you have already shaded. (Don’t change the values!) Determine what the volume of the rock is based on the pictures in your notebook. If the rock has a mass of 10 g, what is the DENSITY of this rock?

Practice A graduated cylinder was originally filled with the bottom of the meniscus at the number 10. An unidentified object was placed into the cylinder and the final volume is shown on the right. What is the volume of the unidentified object?

Practice A balance and a graduated cylinder are used to determine the density of a mineral sample. The sample has a mass of 14.7 g and a volume of 2.2 mL. What is the density of the mineral sample?

Practice What is the volume of the hammer shown? If the hammer has a density of 100 g/mL, what is the mass of the hammer?
