The questions Explore how Reginald Rose presents the theme of justice in 12 Angry Men Consider: - Particular Jurors and their viewpoints -Prejudice - America in the 1950s One determined and skilled individual can wield a lot of influence. Explore why Juror 8 is a central character in the play. -The ways in which Rose presents him -His relationship with the other members of the jury -How he manages to persuade the jury to vote ‘Not Guilty’

What do I do first? What does this word mean? Does it suggest a simple. Straightforward answer? HOW the writer does anything requires analysis of his techniques, not just repetition Consider the question and try to work out what the examiner wants: Explore how Reginald Rose presents the theme of justice in 12 Angry Men The theme of justice means that my response must look at the concept of justice and how it is shown… So, what is justice?

Question 1 continued Explore: This is the word that tells you that you need to find a range of response, rather than a simple answer. There is even room for “debate”. How the writer…: This phrase should alert you to the fact that the essay requires analysis of the writer’s choices and decisions. Justice: As a theme, what is the message of this play? How is justice done? Would there be any justice without juror 8? What gets in the way of justice?

“Explore… why…” is not the same as “tell me what X does” Question 2 One determined and skilled individual can wield a lot of influence. Explore why Juror 8 is a central character in the play. 2 parts to this question – both are important. The first sentence gives me clues. I must use the terms here as the basis for my response. In what ways is J8 skilled and determined? “Explore… why…” is not the same as “tell me what X does” If he is a key figure then he must wield influence – especially in the area of justice – a key theme… this is your focus.

Question 2 continued In a question with a quotation, use the key words of the quotation to focus your response Look for moments when J8 is either skilled or determined – focus on these For him to significant in the play he must use these attributes to further the playwright’s message – that justice needs only the courage of an ordinary man in order to prevail.

Look at these descriptors from Band 4… Comments about the writer’s use of characterisation / theme /plot / setting for literary effect show sustained appreciation of the writer’s craft Engagement with the text is sustained, examples used are fully relevant Look at these descriptors from Band 4… You get no credit without examples to back up your argument. Whether you PEE or PEARL or Zoom in and out, the message is the same: Simple assertion that something is so, does not carry any weight without evidence.
