Finish the statement: Waning means ________ of the moon can be seen Finish the statement: Waning means ________ of the moon can be seen. And it will be the ________ side. 4/11/17

Warm Up Answer! Finish the statement: Waning means Less_ of the moon can be seen. And it will be the _Left_ side.

Homework! - 7 Days until the Milestones! - Work on getting your mind right for them! - Make sure that you are looking over your moon notes, eclipse notes, and tides notes.

Notes on eclipses and tides Yay!!

Movement of the earth, moon and Sun Rotation- the act of rotating or spinning around an axis or center.

Movement of the earth, moon and Sun Revolution- the circular movement of an object around a center.

Movement of the earth, moon and Sun Orbit- the curved path of a revolving object.

Solar Eclipses! The moon comes between the Sun and the Earth. The Moon casts a shadow on the Earth. A Solar Eclipse can happen during a new moon.

Solar Eclipse Sun Earth Moon

Solar Eclipse Fun Facts! If you are at the North or South poles you will never see a total solar eclipse. A solar eclipse can cause a decrease in temperature up to 20 degrees. Looking directly at a total solar eclipse can cause total blindness.

Lunar Eclipses! The Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon. The Earth casts a shadow on the Moon. A Lunar Eclipse can happen during a Full Moon.

Lunar Eclipse Sun Earth Moon

Lunar Eclipse Fun Facts! Some lunar eclipses can last close to 4 hours! In ancient times the people thought that when a lunar eclipse happened that the gods were angry with them. The word eclipse comes from the Greek word meaning downfall.

Why don’t we have eclipses every month? The moon’s orbit has a tilt to it compared to the orbit of the Earth around the sun. This causes the moon to pass above or below the Earth.

Notes on Tides … again. 

Tides Information! Tides are the rise and fall of water at a coastline. High Tide- Water comes in Low Tide – Water goes out Occurs in all bodies of water but is the most noticeable with the ocean.

Causes of tides Tides are caused by the interaction of the Earth, Moon and Sun. Gravity “pulls” on the water causing a tidal bulge. There are two types of tides High Tide Low Tide

High Tides Occurs on 2 sides of the Earth The side of the Earth that is closest to the moon. The side of the Earth that is farthest away from the moon.

Low Tide Occurs on two sides of the Earth The sides of the Earth that are between the high tide

Tide Cycles! Daily Tide Cycle Monthly Tide Cycle There are two high tides everyday There are two low tides everyday Monthly Tide Cycle There are two special tides that occur when the sun, moon, and Earth line up in specific ways Spring Tides Neap Tides

Spring Tides The Moon, sun, and Earth are in a straight line. High tides are higher than normal, low tides are lower than normal. These happen during new moons or full moons.

Neap Tides The Moon, Sun and Earth are at a 90 degree angle. High tides are lower than normal and low tides are higher than normal. Neap tides occur during quarter moons.
