Our new topic is: 8A Food glorious food

Title: 8Aa On a diet Date: 11/11/2018 Keywords: diet, nutrients, recommended daily amounts 2 mins Write down what you think the word ‘diet’ means.

8Aa On a diet We are learning today: Why we need food The main 5 nutrients that we need Tests for starch, proteins and fats

Diet The words diet means ‘what you eat’. We need to eat food because it provides raw materials for our bodies which we need for: Energy Growth and repair Good health

Nutrients All the nutrients we need are found in our food. When we eat the digestive system breaks down the food to use and store these nutrients. There are five nutrients: -Carbohydrates -Proteins -Fats -Minerals -Vitamins We also need fibre and water

Questions 5 mins What does ‘diet’ mean? Where do we get nutrients from? What are the five nutrients? C_________ P_______ F____ M_______ V________ What are the other two things we need in our diets?

Your task 5 mins Food Main nutrient(s) in food Look at the food labels that you have on your table. Copy and complete the table for each of the food labels that you have. 5 mins Food Main nutrient(s) in food

Demo – write what you see Food tests Demo – write what you see Food test Procedure Observations Starch (a carbohydrate) Take a small sample of the food and add 3 drops of iodine solution. Proteins Add 10 drops of biuret solution 1 and solution 2 to the food (crushed) in a test tube. Fats Rub food on to paper for 20 seconds.

Your task Tagliatelle carbonara ready meal Typical values Amount per portion (g) Protein 31.5 Carbohydrate 71.5 Fat 26.0 Fibre 6.5 Sodium 3.0 Draw a bar chart for the information shown in the table. Finish it for homework – due Monday.

Title: 8Ab Keeping it balanced Date: 11/11/2018 Keywords: balanced diet, nutrients, food pyramid 2 mins In 2007 adverts for unhealthy foods were banned from being shown during children's TV shows. Why do you think this is? Write down your ideas.

8Ab Keeping it balanced We are learning today: What each nutrient is used for in the body The importance of eating a balanced diet

Nutrients There are 5 main nutrients: Carbohydrates Fats Proteins Vitamins Minerals We also need fibre and water.

Your task 15 mins Copy and complete the table below using pages 10-11 in the year 8 textbook. Nutrient Use in the Body Good source (pick one) Carbohydrates Provides energy Protein Growth and repair Fat store energy and insulate the body Vitamins & Minerals Small amount needed to maintain health Fibre Helps keep the food moving through the gut Water Cells and body fluids

Your task 5 mins Draw a plate in your book- put everything on that you have written in the table.

A balanced diet What is a balanced diet?

A balanced diet The nutrients that we need come from our food but they are not all found in one food – we need to eat a variety of foods to get all of the nutrients we need.

The food pyramid

Your task 5 mins Draw a plate in your book and plan a balanced meal that contains all seven of the things we need in our diet. Use the food pyramid on page 10 of the textbook to help you.

Poor diets 5 mins Use page 12 in the book to describe the effects of: Eating too much fat Not eating enough food Eating food that contains too much energy

Title: 8Ac You’ve got guts Date: 11/11/2018 Keywords: digestive system, stomach, intestines 1 mins Look at your food diary. What nutrients did you get the most of from your diet over the weekend?

8Ac You’ve got guts We are learning today: The process of digestion and what organs are involved in this process

A Balanced Diet? Do you think I ate a balanced diet yesterday? Look at your food diary – do you think you ate a balanced diet? What changes could we make? My breakfast: Bran flakes with milk and sultanas My Lunch: Cheese and pickle sandwich, pickled onion monster munch and a Cadburys crème egg. My dinner: Roast chicken, carrots, mash potato, cabbage, broccoli, Yorkshire puddings and gravy.

The digestive system The digestive system uses organs to break down food the food is broken down into nutrients so that they are easier to move around the body and organs.

Digestion Digestion makes larger particles of food smaller so that they can pass through the walls of the small intestine. Small particle

Fill in the gaps 3 mins Digestion makes large, _______ particles of food small and _______ so that they can pass through the walls of the small intestine. Soluble Insoluble

The digestive system Mouth Gullet Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Rectum

Mouth Digestion starts here and food is chewed and mixed with saliva making it easier to chew and swallow.

Gullet Here muscles around the gullet contract and relax to push food and water down towards the stomach.

Stomach The stomach has gastric acid inside to break down food stored there. This acid kills bacteria that could have been swallowed. Muscles in the stomach’s wall help to move and mix food around.

Small intestine Carbohydrates, fats and proteins in foods are digested here. These nutrients are absorbed through the lining of the intestine and into the blood.

Large intestine Here is where undigested materials end up (fibre). It maintains the bodies fluid balance and also holds waste before its eliminated, being processed into faeces.

Your task 10 mins Use page 14 in the textbook to label the diagram with the names of the organs and their functions.

Your task 10 mins Measure the length of your gut with your partner. Part of gut How to measure it Length (cm) mouth distance from your mouth to ear gullet from your chin to the bottom of your breast bone stomach longest distance from thumb to little finger small intestine distance from head to feet multiplied by 4 large intestine distance from head to feet rectum Total length: add the lengths together and then divide them by 100 to convert the centimetres to metres

Title: 8Ad/8Ae Enzymes Date: 11/11/2018 Keywords: enzymes, digestion, model 2 mins What do we need for digestion?

8Ad Breakdown We are learning today: The role of enzymes in digestion What enzymes do to our food that we eat How the small intestine is adapted for absorption of small food molecules

Enzymes Enzymes turn large molecules of food into smaller one. They don’t get used up and they can change shape as they work. There are lots of different enzymes that work on the different nutrients found in our food.

Enzymes The digestive system produces digestive juices that contain enzymes – special chemicals that help us digest our food. Different enzymes work best in different areas of your body.

Modelling enzymes Draw the diagram  Label your diagram with the following words: - large molecule - small molecules - enzymes

Small intestines The small intestines are adapted to absorb small molecules because they contain villi.

Your task Use the glossary in the year 8 textbook to find out the definitions for: Arteries Veins Capillaries

Your task

Title: 8A assessment Date: 11/11/2018 Keywords: enzymes, digestion, digestive system 2 mins List as many organs in the digestive system as you can.

Write a story or cartoon: Identify the food groups in a cheese sandwich. Write the organs in the digestive system in order that the cheese sandwich will pass through. Describe what happens in each organ. Use the level ladder to help you.
