Modern problems with industrialization

Resurgence of protectionism 20th century—Rise of supranatioalism and free trade 21st century—Rise of protectionism Brexit “America First” Protectionism—Protecting domestic industries from foreign competition Response to outsources and globalization

Gender inequality Microloans—Small loans to start a business Have helped women become economically independent More women working, but… Work in low paying jobs Agricultural jobs in LDC’s Not getting equal pay for equal work

Environmental Impact of industrialization Air pollution—Release of CO2 and over 80 different toxins from manufacturing Water pollution—Runoff from factories, waste in oceans from mass consumption Soil pollution—Caused by increased amount of chemicals in agriculture and runoff from factories Leads to soil becoming infertile

Greenhouse effect—Fossil fuels release gases (CO2) that increase the temperature of the Earth Global Warming—The idea that the Earth is warming from the greenhouse effect due to industry River and aquifer depletion from increased water use

What do all of these animals have in common?

Loss of habitat—Species going extinct, impact on ecosystems Land degradation—Desertification, deforestation caused by climate change or industrialization Sahel Loss of habitat—Species going extinct, impact on ecosystems Visual pollution—Nature is just prettier

Animals at risk of extinction

Global cooperation on climate change Paris Climate Accords—Countries agree to report every five years on pollution levels Also agree to lower pollution levels More lenient on LDC’s than MDC’s to cut pollution

Sustainable Development Sustainable Development—Developing an industrial economy in an environmentally and humanly friendly way that will not harm future generations Environmental regulation—Government laws that limit the amount of pollution companies can create Ecotourism—Tourism that uses minimal energy and is environmentally friendly
