Welcome to 6th Grade Science! Mrs. Sujata Ryan

About Mrs. Ryan Born in New Delhi, India. Grew up in Ottawa, Canada. Lived in Phoenix for 31 years. Love to play the violin, guitar, banjo, piano and sing in the Tempe Community Chorus! Enjoy sewing, quilt making and doing exercise DVDs.

My Family ALL THREE KIDS WENT TO AKIMEL A-AL!!! Husband, Arun – Engineer at Arrow Electronics Son, Jay – Software developer at GM Daughter, Amanda – Academic advisor at Central Arizona College Daughter, Selena – Junior at NAU in Music Education. ALL THREE KIDS WENT TO AKIMEL A-AL!!!

My Education B.S. in Physics B.Ed. in Secondary Education M.Ed. in Counseling

My Teaching Background High school physics, math and general science in Canada and Arizona, and middle school science. 2nd Grade at Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary for ten years. Now in fifth year of 6th grade Science at Akimel A-al!

WEB Program tomorrow for 6th Graders WEB = Where Everyone Belongs Orientation, make new friends, do fun activities, meet 8th grade mentors Starts at 8:30, pick up at 12:00.

Core Enrichment – Period 4 Students will rotate through their core classes for more time during the time frame of fourth period Monday is extra time with Period 1 Tuesday is extra time with Period 3 Thursday is extra time with Period 5 Friday is extra time with Period 7 All of sixth grade will have 20 minutes of personal silent reading time at the beginning of Core Enrichment All students will need a reading book every day of Core

Bus Information Make sure to know your bus “color” before the first day and write it down! In boundary bus information – See district website under Departments and Transportation link Maricopa buses – Ask or call the front office BEFORE THE FIRST DAY Buses leave promptly after school!!!!

BOTTOM LINE FOR FIRST DAY Know your bus number or color. Have your schedule handy for each period and room number. Bring a pencil and paper. Bring your lunch, if you can, to save time in the cafeteria. Ask teachers for help – that’s what we’re here for! 

Other supplies that are required Science Supplies One green composition notebook and 1 green pocket folder, preferably plastic so it lasts! Other supplies that are required Sharp pencils, erasers, ruler, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, red pens, 3-ring refill paper Ear-buds and flash drive

Science Unit Topics Scientific Method and Science Process Life Science Plants – Life Cycles and Parts of Plants Cells and the Human Body Earth Science Earth’s Waters Ocean Zones Earth’s Atmosphere Physical Science Energy – Kinds, Transformations, Renewable and Nonrewable sources

Homework One project per quarter, done at home. Provides practice, extension and responsibility. Significant impact on overall grade. No regular daily or weekly homework, but may have to finish work not completed in class. Best practice: Write homework down in your agenda and check it when you get home! Study for tests and quizzes (read notes and study guides).

School – Wide Grading Policy 20 % Classwork – activities, walk-in work, practice assignments, etc. 80% Assessments - Tests, quizzes, labs, projects, assignments.

Check Grades Online – Parent Vue On a computer, go to www.kyrene.org, click Parents, then click Parent Vue. Set up account if new to Kyrene, using Activation Key from school. If you have an account from last year, you are all set! Students can set up an account at Student Vue, using their usual Kyrene username and password.
