E-Cigs (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems) Battery operated devices designed to look like regular tobacco cigarettes that contain liquid nicotine 6/16/2016

How do E-cigs work? The user inhales through a mouthpiece. Air flow triggers a sensor that switches on a battery- powered heater. The heater vaporizes liquid nicotine in a small cartridge. The user gets a puff of hot vapor (containing chemicals to create the appearance of smoke) that feels a lot like tobacco smoke. When the user exhales, there is a cloud of vapor that looks like smoke. Nicotine It is the addictive substance in tobacco. It is an extremely fast-acting drug. It reaches the brain within 10-15 seconds of being inhaled. A teen’s brain is still developing, which can make teens more vulnerable to becoming addicted. 6/16/2016

Consequences costs a lot of money, about $100 to get started become addicted vapor contains toxic chemicals poorly influence younger siblings get in trouble at school or by parents get suspended from sports get in trouble with the law lose the trust of parents harms babies they can explode! 6/16/2016 CATCH My Breath 6-8

Facts E-cig “vapor” is NOT water vapor. In fact, it’s not vapor at all. It is an aerosol made up of tiny particles that contains a mixture of nicotine and harmful chemicals. E-cigs are known to occasionally explode in your pocket or your mouth. E-cigarettes contain nicotine levels equivalent to and higher than conventional cigarettes. Highly addictive and habit forming Very toxic if inhaled, swallowed, or in contact with the skin. Increases your heart rate and blood pressure and can cause dizziness, nausea, and stomach pain. Causes anxiety, irritability, headaches, sleep disturbances, hunger and cravings when going through withdrawal Inhalation of nicotine may aggravate existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma. Discuss the pros and cons of switching to e-cigs. 6/16/2016 CATCH My Breath 6-8

A Growing Industry $9.325 billion is spent every year on tobacco and E-cigarette advertising, social media and promotion—more than $25 million every day, or more than $1 million every hour. As dollars spent by the industry on advertising rose, youth use also rose. Youth use has increased since 2011. Advertisers spent 120 million dollars on advertising in 2014. 6/16/2016 CATCH My Breath 6-8
